Obama blasts court decision By Eric Zimmermann - 01/21/10 01:22 PM ET

President Obama came out swinging today against the Supreme Court's ruling in a major campaign finance case.

In a statement issued by the White House, Obama said the decision "has given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics."

He added that his administration will work with Congress to soften the impact of the decision. Here's his full statement:

With its ruling today, the Supreme Court has given a green light to a new stampede of special interest money in our politics. It is a major victory for big oil, Wall Street banks, health insurance companies and the other powerful interests that marshal their power every day in Washington to drown out the voices of everyday Americans. This ruling gives the special interests and their lobbyists even more power in Washington--while undermining the influence of average Americans who make small contributions to support their preferred candidates. That's why I am instructing my Administration to get to work immediately with Congress on this issue. We are going to talk with bipartisan Congressional leaders to develop a forceful response to this decision. The public interest requires nothing less.

Democrats are already working on legislation to address the decision, which struck down limits on independent expenditures by corporations and labor groups.

Sounds to me like Obamah is saying this is a victory for the Private Sector and a defeat for the Big Government.

Which is exactly how the majority of the Supreme Court saw it.

Cato's got a good video up, quoting some alarming Government testimony before SCOTUS that proves just how much the BCRA could restrict first amendment speech.

“Sounds to me like Obamah is saying this is a victory for the Private Sector and a defeat for the Big Government. “

Exactly and it should lead to better candidates and reduce the “incumbent advantage”. Candidates without name recognition have trouble getting enough money to start their campaigns because they don’t have enough money to contact them... kind of a catch 22.

With a sponsor, or a number of sponsors, they can now more easily get their campaign “off the ground” and better compete with those who have the trappings of their office.

‘in our politics’

Right there were the 3 key words of the whole thing.

Obama doesn’t want any ads run against him and the Democrats after having beat up on corporations, he doesn’t want them able to run ads against them....

And ‘our’ politics? Isn’t it America’s ?

So here is a guy who owes his political life to special-interest groups like unions, ACORN, environmentalist organizations, trial lawyers, dissing a USSC decision regarding monetary contributions from the likes of them? Who does he think he's fooling? This Administration is about nothing if not special interest groups, lobbying, political kickbacks and closed-door meetings.

“What a Prez we have. Blasts the SCOTUS.”

Just what I was thinking. Why should SCOTUS give two hoots what TOTUS thinks? This is beyond ego.

It reminds me of an old schoolyard taunt. “Who died and made you King of the World”?

I could have predicted Obama's words. I knew that his response would be full of complaints about how this would affect his (and the rest of the left's) agenda, with nary a mention of the fact that this was a ruling based upon the First Amendment. Every time a basic constitutional principle gets in the way, the left acts like it's a travesty that they can't just have their way. Well guess what libs, THAT'S PRECISELY THE FUNCTION THAT THE CONSTITUTION WAS INTENDED TO PERFORM. The very reason for having a constitution is to place very clear boundaries around the federal government's powers, and to make it difficult to change those boundaries.

The Constitution was designed to keep the baser aspects of human nature from driving the country over a cliff. It was intended to keep us on the track that was defined by our founding principles, and to do it rigidly.
