America’s Toughest Sheriff Faces New Fight
Fox News ^ | 1/13/2010 | William La Jeunesse

He is Arizona’s most popular politician and arguably America’s toughest sheriff, but today Joe Arpaio faces his biggest challenge: a grand jury investigation that could cost him his office.

“It is not right for law enforcement to abuse its authority in this way,” said Paul Charlton, a former US Attorney now representing one of Arpaio’s legal targets. “If you find yourself living in a place where law enforcement investigates its enemies and accuses judges who rule against them of crimes, you are either living in a third world county or Maricopa country.”

The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is America’s fourth largest sheriff’s department. For 18 years is has been run by Joe Arpaio, a flamboyant former Las Vegas cop and DEA agent who turned a local law enforcement agency into a national headline machine.

Arpaio forced inmates to wear pink underwear, claiming the color ‘calmed’ them. He created the nation’s first female chain gang. He reduced inmate meals from three to two a day, claiming to serve the cheapest prisoner meal in the U.S. at just 15 cents each.

Officials currently under investigation by the Sheriff include:

Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon

Chairman of the Maricopa Board of Supervisors Don Stapley

Supervisor and the county’s leading Hispanic politician Mary Rose Wilcox

State Attorney General Terry Goddard

County Manager David Smith

Presiding Criminal Judge Gary Donahoe

Who is “we don’t care”? You and a few other Sheriff Joe butt sniffers?

Are you cool with these people subpoenaing the readership of a news website? If you are okay with that then STFU when Holder decides to go after FR or when he decides to go after Obama’s enemies.

Or are you so naive to think that power in the hands of any individual unchecked never leads to corruption if they look conservative enough? Napolitano isn’t the one going after political opponents like Sheriff Joe and Coompany.

Arpaio will not back down. I hope he gives em’ one hell of a fight. If there is a legal defense fund set up for him I’m definitely in .

The liberal news source is a press outlet that has been subpoenaed by Sheriff Joe and Co. They want to know who has been visiting the site.

Cross out Sheriff Joe, put in Eric Holder’s name and make the site in question FR.

No difference

Is there a defense fund being set up for Joe Arpaio?

I am not sending anything to Haiti. I’ve been there several times in the past and know what it is like…Stone Age past, present, and future.

I want to keep my contributions at home when it is a good cause like this one.

I see a tough on crime guy that also likes to abuse the power of his office to go after his political enemies for his own personal gain while running a jail system that is corrupt.

Phil Gordon is a sleaze ball. Don Stapely is is of questionable character. Mary Rose Wilcox is a pro illegal immigration mouthpiece, also involved in some questionable dealings. Joe may be flamboyant but these people need to be put out of office.

Most of Joe's detractors can be traced to the open borders crowd.

” Maybe you can live with looking the other way when a person in power abuses their office for their own gain but I won’t.”

But are you perfectly willing to look the other way while MILLIONS of foreign nationals abuse this nation? Joe is enforcing the law..his detractors don’t like it because it works!

Arizona has proven enforcement works!

Drop in crime coincides with exodus of illegal immigrants

A marked drop in Phoenix-area crime coincides with the recession and a drop in the number of illegal immigrants in Arizona.
Phoenix has seen a 25 percent decline in the number of crimes during the first five months of 2009 compared to the same time period in 2007

Immigration, economy affecting number of births in Arizona
Dec. 30, 2009 12:00 AM

[snip]state’s Department of Health Services show a 7 percent drop in the number of infant births in the past year alone and a more than 10 percent drop over the past two years....

But the impact of the state’s anti-illegal-immigration efforts, particularly the nearly 2-year-old employer-sanctions law, cannot be ignored, he said....

So far this year, there have been 3,193 fewer births among Hispanics compared with 2008.

I have no issue with sleazy people being kicked out of office but there is enough stench from the other side as well. Joe gets a lot of credit for being tough on illegals. Okay, he’s doing his job and there is serious resistance from some quarters for it. I don’t cry for illegals or the sob stories from their enablers.

Not all of his detractors are open border people though.

I still cannot locate the provision in the US CONSTITUTION that authorizes the Federal Government to be involved in a Free, Independent, Sovereign State, unless of course they are claiming Treason, Piracy or Counterfeiting. All it takes is for the Legislature to immediately revoke ALL Agreements, Contracts and Permissions granted to the Federal Government authorizing their presence in the State.

You can enforce the law without abusing your office. And, no I won’t accept the straw man argument that this is about illegal immigration.

Again:

http://www.phoenixnewtimes.com/2007-10-18/news/breathtaking-abuse-of-the-constitution/

Go read what Sheriff Joe and his colleagues are doing here with respect to going after a media outlet. What right do they have to know what articles people read? Eric Holder and Obama can kiss my ass if they think that they get to know what I read on-line if it doesn’t go in line with what they think.

They can also get involved if citizen’s rights are being violated which has been known to happen at the state level. (Of course the Feds have a history of that as well)

Of course a state can try that route and what you have is an attempt at secession.

A subpoena was issued for the paper's records. It wasn't issued by Joe. So what? This ‘media’ outlet has done all it could for years to stop immigration enforcement and anyone who tried it. You and I both know that is what this is all about.

Before this is said and done...Sheriff Joe is gonna need a lot of support form his fellow Americans....and those who would do this to him need to understand they jeopardize their community standing as “fellow” Americans...

Point taken, however I still cannot find that specific issue within the Constitutional Limits of the Federal Government, unless it is TREASON, PIRACY, or COUNTERFEITING. Maybe you would be so kind as to point it out for all of us?? Which Article? Which Section? Specifically Authorizes these actions in a Free, Independent, Sovereign State.?

The article really covers the special prosecuter. Did not see any thing about Joe abusing his office. Plus it is from a paper that leans left so is it all true or is it slant?

Circular debate. Sovereign states cannot enact laws that violate the rights of US citizens as set forth in the Constitution. The Feds are not supposed to usurp State’s rights.

Well, it sounds like that first site published his address. If it was done in an attempt to harass him, he may in fact, have a case against them.

As for the second site’s mention, I don’t know if “his opponents” are involved in illegal activities or not. You know, it is usually the bad guy who tries to take out the good guy. I have no problems with the good guy taking that person on.

However, as I am not privy to the local dealings there, I can’t talk with certitude. That said, everything else I know about him I like and support.

If the information is publicly available then there’s nothing illegal about it although it is bush league to say the least. That does not grant them the right to go on a massive fact finding expedition or dig into people’s viewing habits though.

As I see it, and for the record, I also live in his county and vote for him... He is simply going after his political enemies that attack him first... they cant beat him at the ballot box so they have to go an alternative route.

First off, the only times I grab a new times anymore is when I need some paper to start my camp fires... That is where aspiring “reporters” are auditioning for a job for those other supermarket tabloids...

I grew up in farm country, knowing if you want to mess with the bull, you are going to get the horns!

There is another old saying, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones... in other words, you had damn well be squeaky clean if you are going to go after the man that is elected to enforce our laws! I mean he investigates for a living. Pretty much that simple, If you are going to go after him, he will be coming back after you, or at a minimum doing a little checking around on you.

Just my 2 cents on his jail system too... IT WORKS... I know some people who have had kids end up there for something stupid and they have turned their lives around after getting out from spending 30 days in the tents!

From what I have read, that is not typical results of most country club county lock-ups. Pink Underwear, Green Bologna, Tent City, Chain Gangs, and I think they only get to watch news on their tv’s... Small things that make jail time an undesirable experience on your first visit.
