A RISQUE billboard that depicts Jesus's mother looking dejected after unsatisfying sex with Joseph has given Kiwi Catholics a nasty pre-Christmas surprise.
The huge ad erected in downtown Auckland today shows the unhappy couple in bed accompanied by the slogan: "Poor Joseph. God was a hard act to follow".
In the fresco-style work, Joseph looks down red-faced while an anguished Mary looks to the heavens.
It was the brainchild of a progressive Christian church, St Matthew's, whose vicar Archdeacon Glynn Cardy says it was a cutting-edge strategy to engage non-believers.
"Progressive Christianity is distinctive in that not only does it articulate a clear view, it is also interested in engaging with those who differ," Cardy said, with the advertisement still appearing on their website.

I thought it was kind of funny, but they should have known (and they probably did) that this would offend.
Some regard St James as being the stepbrother of Jesus - the son of Joseph, explaining references to him in the Bible as brother to Jesus.
At least with ‘piss Christ’ you had a choice whether to view it or not. WTF.
Of course Mary and Joseph had sex, they were married and they behaved like any other married couple. The troubling aspect of the advert comes at the first part of the sentence, “After God ...” implying carnal relations between Mary and God the Father, which is unbiblical and sacrilegious.
(complete aside - does anyone else find it odd the way the vowels get switched between the words ‘religious’ and ‘sacrilegious’)
The Phelps' are not Baptists, Christians nor right-wing extremists.
I know plenty of Moslems who try to claim Islamist terrorist aren’t real Moslems either. That’s not a game I see any point in playing.
I certainly don’t want to share any beliefs with Phelps.
When we will have the Mohammad of Islam screwing little boys?
Jesus had siblings, didn’t he? Did the Holy Spirit father those, too? Nope - Joseph did.
Makes sense. I don't consider it authoritative, of course.
IOW's it has non-Biblical sources. Thanks

You dont need a source, you need a brain.
However ,if you have a computer you certainly can use Google.
Throw out crap, it gets thrown back in your face here at FR, get over it.
I had a priest tell me that Mary was born without sin, so of course she never had sex with Joseph when I asked him that, and that didnt make sense to me, seeing as how sex between married couples is not sinful.
Catholics and Orthodox don't believe that John and Jesus were "half-brothers". Blessed Mary ever virgin! I think this link from an Orthodox site gives a more thorough explanation than I can. Why is Mary ever virgin?
Joseph may have had children from another wife. We don't know because they are never explicitly mentioned.
Ask them if they believe in Jihad. Ask them why all the flaming hate rhetoric comes from the clerics.
Thats not a game I see any point in playing.
Me either, none are trustworthy by design. I figure all muslims are either the cowering "go along to get along muslims" or the beheading murdering "good muslims" who will kill them if they get out of line.
Muslims kill more muslims than any other group.
As a Catholic, I find that offensive. That the idea of adults refraining from sex because of a higher obligation, to me, isn’t silly. We are more than our bodies. If protestants want to believe that, fine, but no reason to insult and disparage my beliefs, like the people who put up the billboard did.
You may not consider him Baptist, but Fred Phelps considers himself to be Baptist.
Well, it is also an Orthodox one, and we naturally disagree with out, as did Luther and Calvin, two Protestants of note. The billboard did have one thing right: what greater experience could Mary have, than to give birth to the Son of God? Could Joseph sire offspring that would measure up? Talk about invidious comparisons. Joseph Junior would say, I can do lots of things better than Jesus! And Mary would look at him and say: you little twerp! If only you knew.
Has everyone forgotten how to use a search engine. Let me do it for you.
When forty years of age, Joseph married a woman called Melcha or Escha by some, Salome by others; they lived forty-nine years together and had six children, two daughters and four sons, the youngest of whom was James (the Less, “the Lord’s brother”). A year after his wife’s death, as the priests announced through Judea that they wished to find in the tribe of Juda a respectable man to espouse Mary, then twelve to fourteen years of age. Joseph, who was at the time ninety years old, went up to Jerusalem among the candidates; a miracle manifested the choice God had made of Joseph,
