Newly appointed Chief of Staff of the Russian Land Forces, Lieutenant-General Sergey Skokov, recently made a statement that caused a major sensation across the Russian Federation. Speaking about possible conflicts that Russia may face in the future, he outlined three distinct scenarios: fighting in the "western, southern" and eastern" directions...

I believe that's the original source. Try translating those stories. My Russian is almost useless. It was just one year in high school, 40 years ago. NATO is HATO in Russian, and генерал Скоков is General Skokov, IIRC. That story was mentioned at http://www.robertamsterdam.com/
So much for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
Russia is suffering from depopulation... China just next door is suffering for overpopulation... It is inevitable that they are going to be in a conflict with each other as crowded Chinese start pouring over the border and setting Russian territory.
China would be better off exporting excess population to Africa. I think we will see just that with the Chinese gaining a Singapore like foothold somewhere, but unlike Malaysia, they will not stop at the city limits but will continue to occupy a larger and larger area. I fully expect that within the next decade there will be thousands of Chinese troops stationed somewhere in Africa to protect the Diaspora.
Of course, this is coming from a nation that still has an abominable road network and cannot even provided decent medical care, clean water or reliable power to their population.
Ah, everything old is new again. China and Russia went after each other in border disputes in the 60s.
Welcome to Cold War, the Sequel!!
So “The China Card” is back in play.
Someone must have red The Bear and The Dragon by Tom Clancy.
Watch out, Canada. This means they are mostly looking north.
Siberia is just across the border with rich resources as Russia depopulates and drinks itself to death.
“...fighting in the “western, southern” and eastern” directions.” Really? The russkis aren’t gonna fight the polar bears?
The russians have been fearful of the “yellow peril” since the invasion of the Mongol Horde.
Southern direction - the general thinks Imanutjob is going to turn on Russia?
For Russia, everyone is a potential enemy. I don’t think they have any natural friends.
No kidding.
Russia’s two most dangerous potential enemies are China and Islam. Europe is not a realistic threat. And the U.S. is not a threat.
But that idiot Putin has been busy cozying up to China, arming and stirring up the Muslims to his South, and playing games with Georgia and Ukraine.
Mark Steyn points out Russia’s real problem in America Alone. They are committing demographic suicide. China will move into Siberia for the mineral wealth, and the Muslims will move across the southern border. Russia is in real danger, and all Putin can do is poke sticks at America while he arms his worst enemies.
I agreed with Bush that Russia was our natural ally. No longer. Putin is absolutely determined to make trouble, and the Russians just love it.
You beat me!
the Doomsday Scenario...the Muslims start attacking from Turkey, Iran and the ‘Stans, then China sees opportunity and attacks from the east. They then compel their US client state to attack with NATO from the West by threatening to call in their note.
Wow, I hadn't thought about it that way but, you're right!!
"The China card" . . . . . I LIKE that!!!
lol Putin is no idiot. Russia is experiencing both economic and demographic surge since he came to power. His success is nothing short of spectacular.
Russia has been existing side by side with Chinese and the muslims for centuries, and it was always the Russians who were outnumbered, yet they managed to survive this long.
US has no sense of history and long-term relations and processes, thats it sees everything as a dramatic, climactic point.
From everything I have seen, the Russian demographics are not good. Population is shrinking, childbirth is well under what is needed to keep the population level. And while they’ve always had a drinking problem, that’s not good either, with the average Russian male dying in the mid 40s.
Yes, they did well historically fending off the Mongols and others, and gradually expanding over the years. But I don’t think things are great there now, except for those belonging to the new political mafia that has emerged out of the KGB.
Some say Clancy's a time traveler... :)
