The Scariest Jobs Chart Ever

It's now official: The country has lost more jobs as a percentage of peak employment than any time since the Great Depression.

This includes the recessions of the early 1980s, even when they are combined.

Those looking for a v-shaped recovery keep insisting that jobs will come roaring right back, the way they did in the 1948 recession (see the blue line in the chart from Calculated Risk below).

“Don’t worry — they’re talking about another round of stimulus!”

Looks like somebody needs another World War.

“Looks like somebody needs another World War.”

That’s what Afghanistan and Iran are for this round; that’s IF there is any real intent to improve the picture.

Fair enough. But not enough. What was "peak employment" prior to the break? 4.5% unemployment, +/-? How does it compare to other "peak employments?" I'm willing to bet it was singular, certainly among the lowest unemployment rate on record.

I just don't see how smoking the crack of conspiracy theories is fun for anybody. Or constructive.

Robert Reich: This Is No Time To Worry About Government Debt

Joe Weisenthal
Oct. 2, 2009, 7:09 AM

Echoing fellow traveler Paul Krugman, former Clinton cabinet official Robert Reich is banging the drum on spending:

Let me say this as clearly and forcefully as I can: The federal government should be spending even more than it already is on roads and bridges and schools and parks and everything else we need. It should make up for cutbacks at the state level, and then some. This is the only way to put Americans back to work. We did it during the Depression. It was called the WPA.

Yes, I know. Our government is already deep in debt. But let me tell you something: When one out of six Americans is unemployed or underemployed, this is no time to worry about the debt.

[snip]

This is the same guy who said:

No Jobs For White Male Construction Workers

He wants to take the money from the White middle-class (the biggest tax payers) and then deny them access to the jobs = redistribution during a depression. (Could/Should start a revolution, IMO)

” We did it during the Depression. It was called the WPA.”

FDR screwed us then and if he isn’t stopped obama will repeat it this time!

No spending and let the losers be washed out of the system.

I agree about the revolution. I think they are deliberately trying to start one -- they just need the white productive class to start it so that their crackdown and re-making of the government infrastructure can be justified.

Look at this -- "spending even more than it already is on roads and bridges and schools and parks and everything else we need" That's not a recipe for growing the economy. At all. We need to manufacture goods. We need to export to world markets. We need to compete with China, Japan, Germany, and others. We need steady jobs.

Building "parks" gets you exactly squat. It's not a serious suggestion for improving the national economy. What it IS is an method of pissing away productive money until people get to the breaking point.

Clampdown is coming.

seriously...look at those swings in employment. I wonder what was being said about inflation when the rate in the 2’s. The real value of gold against the unemployment rate would be curious.

To me that chart simply shows the recovery period and peak loss. It shows we are taking longer to recover with larger dips in employment.
