IRVING TOWNSHIP, Mich. Each day before the school bus comes to pick up the neighborhood's children, Lisa Snyder did a favor for three of her fellow moms, welcoming their children into her home for about an hour before they left for school.
Regulators who oversee child care, however, don't see it as charity. Days after the start of the new school year, Snyder received a letter from the Michigan Department of Human Services warning her that if she continued, she'd be violating a law aimed at the operators of unlicensed day care centers.
"I was freaked out. I was blown away," she said. "I got on the phone immediately, called my husband, then I called all the girls" that is, the mothers whose kids she watches "every one of them."
Snyder's predicament has led to a debate in Michigan about whether a law that says no one may care for unrelated children in their home for more than four weeks each calendar year unless they are licensed day-care providers needs to be changed. It also has irked parents who say they depend on such friendly offers to help them balance work and family

Coming soon to a government regulating you. :)
Where do these laws come from and how do we stop them?
Unbelievable. Someone needs to send a giant “FU” letter back to these nanny-staters.
I am not that old and remember when it was common for other parents to watch someone’s kids because of a schedule conflict, or emergency. I guess if a child has his friend over every day for a month that is a day care.
All she needs to do is tell the state that she is teaching the kids how to sing a “Praise our great leader” song, then I am sure it will be OK.
Next car pooling moms are going to need a limo license.
Send them back a message that you know where they live, you were in the gulf war and have killed people before, and that they should back off...
Doesn’t it take a village? Aren’t they part of the village?
I heard a story like this out of the UK recently. I thought it wouldn’t happen here. Where does this road go? What is wrong with these people?
I have always had a flexible schedule as a commissioned salesperson which allowed me to help other Moms when it came to picking up their kids from school and/or dropping off.
They in turn helped me when I needed it. The relationship was personal between our families and nobody’s business but ours.
Time for a serious revolt if they start trying to regulate who you can interact with, help, love, like.... what the heck is going on?
I think this is the key sentence of the entire story, and yet nothing about this is ever mentioned again anywhere else in the article. There is missing information here. Who is the neighbor who complained, and why did they complain?? Are they just being a nosy busybody, trying to stir the pot?? Or does the neighbor run a day-care, and is mad because they are losing out on all that money?? It sure seems like there is a bit more to this than what they are reporting. Journalists are so lazy nowadays.
I guess sleepovers can only happen if you have a lodging license, daycare license, and trained in first aid.
Whenever you get the chance, thank a lawyer.
Bureaucrat bullying a**h*l*s
This is the kind of thing that should never have happened.
Here’s why.
The founders were well aware of the atrocities being perpetrated by the British Crown.
They knew very well that for a society or people to be successful and prosperous, there were conditions, rules of being and humanity that must be held ultimate. Some called them “natural laws”.
Chief amongst these is the idea of property.
Another is the idea of contract.
Thats why the original draft of the Declaration of Independence talks about “Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Property”. That’s also why the Constitution says NO STATE can pass a law impairing the obligation of contracts.
See, we’ve been going down this slippery slope for so long, most don’t even have a clue. The state is now hell bent on telling you what you CAN’T do. CAN’T drive too fast. CAN’T watch your neighbors kids. CAN’T sell your kidney, even if you knew someone who really needed it.
It is a simple matter of time before the state changes from telling you what you CAN’T DO to telling you what you MUST DO!!!!
Buy some insurance. Get a swine flu shot. Turn in your neighbor for having a gun.
Just wait.
There’ll be tons of apologists and statists telling us how it’s not so bad. It’s for the greater good. Yada Yada blahh blahh as nauseum...
I don’t even know why I bother writing this stuff...
Ratted out by a Obaman do gooder?
Seriously though who was the nosey nose who blabbed to the State?
Someone needs a ass kicking by some Moms...dont tell the kids.
and you forgot get taxed on per mile.
I used to go to breakfast every day at our neighbor, because my mother left early for work, and then walk to school with the neighbor’s daughter. Was I living in an Andy Hardy movie? Or are we living in a sci-fi dystopia?
