ABC News Was Misquoted on Crowd Size

ABC News Reported D.C. Rally Size in Tens of Thousands, Not 1M to 1.5M as Activist Said.

Conservative activists, who organized a march on the U.S. Capitol today in protest of the Obama administration's health care agenda and government spending, erroneously attributed reports on the size of the crowds to ABC News.

Matt Kibbe, president of FreedomWorks, the group that organized the event, said on stage at the rally that ABC News was reporting that 1 million to 1.5 million people were in attendance.

At no time did ABC News, or its affiliates, report a number anywhere near as large.

The model for crowd counting was provided by Britain's Liberty and Livelihood march in 2002.

... the Countryside Alliance and the police agreed on the CA tally of 407,791 marchers. Critics of the Liberty and Livelihood demonstration may accuse the police of bias towards middle class masses in tweed - but the CA put a great deal of organisation into producing an accurate count.

The CA used two teams of four people each to gauge the numbers passing a specific point during a three-minute period. The first group counted the number of people in a row across the width of Whitehall, and the second counted the number of individual people who passed the same point.

Using the average figure from each team of four counters, organisers could multiply the number of people in a row by the number of rows and come up with a fairly accurate count for a three-minute period.

The CA repeated the exercise every half hour and continually liased with police counters at a point about 800 yards down the road. The method still relied on a sympathetic count by police. If there had been a disagreement, the CA, for all its effort, could not claim the final tally was impartial.

I only saw one other Urkel sign (a small one) so I'll assume that was me. Did you see the other side of it? If you did and it looked like this, then it was me.

the fact is 1.5 million is a fair estimate, but who will give us a fair estimate

Well, we don't have "row counts" BUT, I invite your consideration of another/similar method.

We know the capacity of the capitol mall in a static time-frame. We have the time-lapsed video of the march filling Pennsylvania Ave. for 3.5 hours. If we make adjustments for the differences in area and density, then calculate the time from the start of the march to the end point at the capitol, we should have a good estimate. No?

They really won’t like the next march. ;)

No, they won't.
Pitchforks and torches, tar and feathers.
I was there yesterday and I'll be there for the next one.

I was sort of surprised that there weren’t any counter protesters there, ie, Acorn, or any other organization, etc.

Although that is a good thing, as we could have a peaceful event and enjoy our day. But, I still thought there would be some counter demonstrators there. Hmmmm..Maybe Acorn has to start budgeting their money now that they don’t have the Census job.

This was the most awesome thing I have ever taken part in - ever. I can’t even put into words how great it was.

Up until this year, I’ve never done anything like this. That is a common theme I’ve heard at all 3 tea parties I’ve been to.

I was really expecting ACORN and SEIU thugs to show up in force. I’m glad they didn’t. I really didn’t want any violence.

There were a few isolated people. Nothing too much in the way of counterprotestors.

Pennsylvania Avenue was the place with the crowds, at least during the morning, since the march went from Freedom Plaza to the Capitol. I suspect that to get a truly accurate crowd count, people would need to use Pennsylvania Avenue pictures in addition to the other places.

To be honest... I was only watching the commies to see what they were saying yesterday. I had fox on C-Band satellite years before they were on Cable... I watched them the first day that they came on. I cannot stand to watch them for very long... Brit left and fox and they changed... and even though they are the best of the media outlets... they are far too left-wing for me. I want truth... the whole truth... and nothing but the truth... fox forces me to listen to satan’s people, as well as the truth... and with o’bloviator, chris wallace and others... sometimes the truth cannot be found. I read FR and listen to Rush, Levin and Malkin for my news.

I'm guessing one of two things happened: We had like 4 or 5 counter-protesters in Crystal River FL. They had nice, professionally made signs that said things like, “Health care for all” and “Make Big Business Pay for Health Care.” Two of them, and they were older gentlemen, they set up down in front, by the stage. I guess they were being paid by the hour. They stayed for the whole event. Everyone just ignored them. Maybe they learned something listening to the people speaking.

Actually, you need good pictures or video from Pennsylvania avenue, or you need a good overhead shot from later in the day on the mall.

If you try to add everyone from the morning pictures on Pennsylvania Avenue to the ones on the Mall in the afternoon, you count a lot of people twice.

I’m really disgusted with FoxNews. They’re sticking to the consensus that the number of protesters was “thousands”. They were there for cryin’ out loud. It was hundreds of thousands.
