BOSTON - Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, the liberal lion of the Senate and haunted bearer of the Camelot torch after two of his brothers fell to assassins' bullets, has died at his home in Hyannis Port after battling a brain tumor. He was 77.
For nearly a half-century in the Senate, Kennedy was a steadfast champion of the working class and the poor, a powerful voice on health care, civil rights, and war and peace. To the American public, though, he was best known as the last surviving son of America's most glamorous political family, the eulogist of a clan shattered again and again by tragedy.
His family announced his death in a brief statement released early Wednesday.
"We've lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever," the statement said. "We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all."

Agreed—and well said.
Chris Matthews on the Today show this morning said that Obama was the 4th Kennedy Brother
brother n sister within a week..
The only thing I have to say about these three is that, with all of their money and connections, you’d think they could hire a good cosmetic dentist to fix those teeth!
LOLOL..unintended insult..
I really, really debated about even visiting FR over the next few days. Partly because of all the bad comments...I just didn’t really want to read them.
And now the confession
I am finding it very difficult to have more than a passing glance to the family. The loss of a loved one is tragic on the personal level. And for that I offer my condolences.
Any other comments to be made by me today will be hard pressed to be as kind. I assure you that the passing of the “liberal lion” is....today I hold my tongue regarding the leading Progressive of the Senate.
We have a WINNER!
I don’t care. It is tacky to jump on people’s graves - no matter what they did in life. You can be glad someone is no longer alive (like Saddam Hussein), but this is a human soul that is now in eternity. God is his judge. This is not the time and place for Freepers to act like people from the Democrat Underground.
I hardly believe that our esteemed president is experiencing within himself any kind of inner mourning or even sadness. Despite the fact that both were and are socialist leftists and elitists, they couldn't be more diverse when it comes to the societal pecking-order.

Question the timing.
It is very convenient
For pushing health care.
Did the Death Panel
Sieze the opportunity
To move things along?
How much must we spend
On a tribute for Teddy?
How many Trillions?
How about we buy
A great big granite marker
Next to Mary Jo’s?
Accomplished at 7:10 AM, apprx, this morning.
I mourn that one of God’s children went so terribly astray. I mourn for the country he worked so tirelessly to destroy. I mourn that rather than seeking God’s forgiveness, Ted Kennedy spent his final moments seeking to continue his dreadful, destructive legacy.
I will not mourn the passing of one of the most bitter partisans and fanatical ideologues to walk the earth in my lifetime. I just don’t have it in me.
He’s with God now. I trust that God is just.
Did you hear Ted Kennedy’s last words?
“Get me that crypt above Marilyn”
Agreed. We should try not to be as self absorbed, unsympathetic and mean spirited as a Kennedy follower...
Actually in his few words the thief said a lot. He acknowledged he was a sinner, he repented, he acknowledged that Jesus was who He said He was. Jesus also knew the theif’s heart and knew him to be sincere. While I believe that last minute true repentance will be accepted by God, and that ALL sin can be forgiven, I choose to believe that Teddy could not do so.
” The socialists now have ONLY 59 votes in the senate”
U R Wrong. They still have Collins & Snow.
Cronkite waits in Hell with a bottle of scotch for Teddy. This dirtbag finally gets his dirtnap. Save a place at the table for Larry King.
Can they try to claim that a sitting US Senator from MA was a Florida resident, even part time? Are they THAT ballsy?
Why not? Who's going to prosecute it? Hell, they should have lost everything under the RICO statues years ago.
As much as I hate to speak ill of the dead, my the people of Massachusetts will wake up and see that CAMELOT is not the Kennedy legacy but it should be CAMEL DUNG!!
Does the family of Mary Jo - if they are any still living - have any comments?
