Badly burned 1-year-old denied ambulance

Swedish emergency services are to launch an internal investigation after a one-year-old boy who received second degree burns was denied an ambulance, reported Aftonbladet newspaper.

The boy had spilled a cup of hot tea on himself on Thursday and was burned on his face, neck and trunk. His mother immediately called SOS Alarm, the agency responsible for handling 112 emergency calls and coordinating rescue work. She was told that they should go to the hospital on their own.

The journey to Huddinge Hospital took forty minutes. In Huddinge, the boy's condition was deemed serious and he was taken by ambulance to Astrid Lindgren Children's Hospital.

“What has happened is extremely unfortunate. It appears that we should have sent an ambulance. But I want to review the conversation before I say anything more,” Britt Stålhandske, deputy director of operations at SOS Alarm in Stockholm, told Aftonbladet.

On Sunday, Aftonbladet reported of another incident in Falun in central Sweden involving a one-year-old with blood poisoning and a fever of 39.2 degrees Celsius who was also denied an ambulance. The incident has since been reported to the National Board of Health and Welfare.

Maybe they'd reached their quota of calls for the day?

These European system are the ones that the leftist pushing health care “reform” in America always hold up as shining examples of great systems.

I am actually on the side of the hospital on this one.

For burns like that you get in the car and go.

I am not sure why they had come to expect someone else to come and get them- except thtat this is what socialized medicine gets you.

Whenever you need a band-aid you expect a doctor and 3 nurses to come rushing to your aid, which uses up the resources until rationing takes place.

I am illustrating a point, not complaining that this boy deservedit or anything (we have way too many knee-jerkers here lately)

Holy cow. This stuff is scary to say the least. I don’t see how people overlook this stuff when they are supporting government healthcare. Ignorance? Stupidity? Blind support of The One? All of the above?

Can’t burns cause shock? Burns are also more critical to children. The body can shut down.

“The fetus, given the opportunity to develop properly before birth,
and given the essential early socializing experiences
and sufficient nourishing food during the crucial early years after birth,
will ultimately develop into a human being.”
-Science Czar, John P. Holdren,
director of the White House Office of Science and Technology.

Exactly how long this process of becoming a human being
after birth, the Science Czar did not say.

Didn’t he say something of understanding the concept of time in regards to being a human being? Thought I heard that somewhere.

Yesterday this same “news” provider had a story about the gov giving up control of the pharmcay industry...due to their own bankruptcy. The comments section looked like stories about Canadian and UK health care. This fits right in with the story in Atlanta about a Doctor who asked, “Why are we going to try what has failed?” Only to be yelled at by his congressman for a reasonable question.

I'm even more curious to learn at what point did the "science czar" stop being a human being? He sounds like a member of the Joseph Mengele fan club.

Yes. I also wonder why a 1 year old was allowed anywhere near a "hot cup of tea."

Sad story.

Meanwhile, a liberal stubbed their little toe and was rushed to a critical care hospital, with a police escort, with a staff of 4 doctors waiting to kiss it! /s

"For burns like that you get in the car and go."

Many assumptions here: did they have a working automobile if so did they have someone able to drive? etc.

Probably not airway issues with a scald with one cup of tea. Probably not full thickness burns either, or circumferential. Probably not abuse. But the dispatcher couldn’t tell over the phone. You also can’t depend on parents to treat burns and pain correctly en route and facial scarring is not what you want to mess with. Not to mention the difficulty driving when your own child is shrieking with pain. Maybe the family had no car.

Now me, I would I would have run water over the burns for ten minutes, packed up the kid with cool wet dressings, and driven him myself, but we’ve also done family transport for all broken bones, chest pain and head trauma (which is maybe not so smart.)

As an EMT I would have no problem transporting child and family - highly appropriate 911 call.
