You're right about that, Joe. And it goes all the way back to Jeff Bell in 1978 when he knocked of sitting senator Case in the primary. They stabbed Bell in the back in the general.

I think Lonegan has a little worse than even chance to win. But if he does win.....and I am putting his sign up on my front lawn to piss off my neighbors..........the GOP will be well advised to play it straight in the general. There is a lot of anger out there and Corzine is hated and if Lonegan wins the primary I for one will be pushing for a State GOP purge from the gitgo, before the general.

Goes back well before that. After Congressman Charles Sandman, longtime conservative GOP leader beat Gov. Cahill in the 1973 primary, the RINOs (liberals, actually) stabbed him in the back. Since Watergate was going on Charley would have lost, but with support by the party he would have run a closer race.
