THe WHO (a group with a spotted past) reports “up to 60” dead in Old Mexico, the schools were closed and now ‘events’ are banned.
Digging thru what is out on the web, I see mostly rehashed bit of the AP piece, the WHO release and a lot of references tothe 1918 flu pandemic. GUess we’ll have to wait for some movement by the Mexican authorities.
THe drug companies will likely make som ebucks on the fear tho.

I just heard on FoxNews that 75 high school students and their families are quarantined with flu-like symptoms. They will be sampling the DNA of their virus.

There was a book out a couple of years ago titled “The Great Influenza” by John Barry about the epidemic of 1918. One of the factors apparently that led to the biggest outbreak in America was that a large city (Philadelphia, if I remember correctly) pondered canceling some giant political celebration (fascism was huge in those days with Wilson’s administration pushing “community activism”). They decided to hold the event after all, and this led to thousands of people being exposed to the virus - leading to a major infection rate in the city.
Maybe Mexico is considering this...

It is why there are so many ruins in Mexico, as I understand. A whole culture — that of the Aztecs and Catholic Conquistadors, both nearly completely erased in whole.

When did Obama blow his “legendary” cool and actually get into a punch match with another legislator? When that legislator claimed Obama’s ward was getting more than it’s fair share.
I did some work with the short line at the Gary steelyard fifteen years ago, and had a meeting where one of the managers had just gotten done attending a trial of two Union thugs who had attempted to hire a hitman on him. I remember that every third house in Gary was boarded up, every house next to it was a pigsty, and the house next to that was kept-up by hard-working decent folks.

DR. MARC SIEGEL: The Most Powerful Virus Is Fear Not Flu
With a new swine flu strain spreading among close to 1,000 people in Mexico and at least eight in the U.S., and with 61 reported deaths in Mexico, the most powerful virus pushing out its tentacles is not flu but fear. We are afraid of what we don’t know and what we don’t understand.
We hear about an unseen killer and we worry that we will be next. The best antidote for this kind of fear is the facts.
So let me take on the fear-laden terms. The first is pandemic. A pandemic means a new flu virus infecting people in several areas of the world at the same time. It can be mild, moderate, or severe. Everyone knows about the 1918 Blue Death that killed over 50 million people worldwide, but how many people realize that the last pandemic, in 1968, ameliorated by vaccines, antibiotics, and public health measures, killed only 32,000 in the U.S. and 700,000 worldwide, less than many yearly outbreaks.
The current swine flu outbreak is not a pandemic, as the outbreak is confined mainly to Mexico, but if it does become one, it is far more likely to be the 1968 variety because of modern public health measures and because we have been exposed to several parts of this virus before and have an immune memory to it.

I don’t think this will be a end of the world bug or even a 1914 Spanish Flu, but when you combine it with all the other things happening, well how much more until people panic, many are skittish now a hot summer localized shortages of goods and services and flu outbreak how much kinling do you have to add before you get a big fire?
I am adding more water and a couple extra bottles of beach to my preps and then praying.

Could it be that all (parts) of the society were exhausted by empire building or taxes and internal (internecine warfare) conflict? The producers (and captitol) flee, leaving behind the detritus of the society.

THINK. What was going on in 1918? I'd hardly call a WWI loan drive a "political" celebration. Here's a good summary of how Philly and St. Louis handled the outbreak differently, with very different mortality results.
Perhaps you should THINK. The rally in Philadelphia was not just a war bond drive, but a political rally given by the corrupt city bosses - who were determined to run the event even after being warned.
WWI was not a war we needed to be involved in, and Wilson’s administration DID encourage city and community activism to supposedly keep the masses in line. His administration was the first true implementation of fascism in this country, where neighborhood monitors were employed to report on their wards and look out for “subversive” behavior. Many war protesters and just plain ordinary people were jailed in regular sweeps. Simply not turning out for these political and war drives was grounds for suspicion. This is why so many Philadelphians showed up that day.
Was it worth 12,000 deaths?
