Mysterious big black cats are scaring residents of Rockland County, N.Y. Wildlife experts aren't sure what they are, or how they got there. Halloween is long gone. So what's up with the black cat sightings near New York's Tallman Mountain State Park?
Signs posted around the Rockland County park warn the public about "Suspicious Animal Sightings."
Other sightings were reported in the hamlet of Palisades. One was in a driveway. Two were in a backyard.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation says wild cat sightings often turn out to be a large dog, coyote or bobcat.
Orangetown police are increasing patrols. State park police have installed cameras to snap pictures of passing animals.
These are described as sleek, long-tailed, black felines. They're larger than mid-size dogs.
No regional zoos, veterinarians or residents have reported a missing large cat.
” A nearly 30 pound Siamese with an attitude has a funny effect on most people.”
My wife must have had a bad incident with a cat as an infant, she doesn’t like them and ss scared of big aggressive cats not afraid of her.
Decades ago, we met this couple, and they had a huge Siamese, about 20#’s. The cat was a spooky cat and would hide on the top of book cases or under beds when strangers came into its home.
We had never seen the cat, and we were playing bridge when it introduced herself to my wife. I had dealt the cards, and just as my wife started to pick up her cards. The cat jumped down from the top of the bookcase where it had been hiding. It landed on my wife’s cards and hissed and snarled at her.
We knew that my wife had a very strong heart as she only screamed and knocked the table, cards and cat over and didn’t pass out nor have a heart attack. Her choice of words reminded me of some navy friends at sea.
After that the cat left her alone.
The cat lived longer than the husband.
When I was a child, we had a black Maine Coon Cat named Bozo. At adulthood, the cat was about 26 lbs and the master of all neighborhood dogs (interestingly his mother was a tiny cat). He was playful, had a unique “SQUEAK” voice, and was always bringing “presents” to mom.
I still miss that cat.
Bozo sounds like a great Coon Cat.
