Most of them are Democrats, so this is progress.
For years the U. of Oregon, and UO Law School have been churing out thousands of good little liberals. They were broadcast into a society that was hard-working and entrepreneurial. The newcomers, including many Californians and East Coast red diaper babies blocked industry, especially anything having to do with national defense; they crushed the logging industry, and attacked the fishing industry. They hate the ranchers. They circumscribed the growth of Portland in the name of their Green God. Now what is left? No industry to speak of. The thousands of lawyers are scrambling for people to sue, and that well has jut about come up dry. It is surprising that unemployment is not higher. There are just so many Starbucks a state can stand.
You’re wrong about that. There is a strong, almost pioneer spirit still rife in Oregon. Until I moved to southern Oregon I never saw so many ‘get the U.S. out of the U.N.’ signs posted on peoples’ property. Unfortunately, in the population centers of Portland, Salem and Eugene there are many, many Democrats and they dilute the vote of eastern and southern Oregon which is mainly rural and remains a bastion of independence and conservative thinking. In fact there is still a strong contingent that believes southern Oregon and the northernmost parts of California should secede from their respective states and form a new state called Jefferson. It’s not a new idea, but it still has merit.
