Outrage in Connecticut — Committee Hearing on Bill to Dictate Catholic Church Operations
NRO ^ | March 09, 2009 | Jack Fowler

Posted on 03/10/2009 2:08:09 PM PDT by Scanian

I received this extremely troubling e-mail over the weekend from my paisan Peter Wolfgang of the Family Institute of Connecticut: Big Turnout Needed Wednesday, March 11th to Stop Major New Attack on Religious Liberty!

The [Democrat]-controlled Judiciary Committee has introduced Raised Bill 1098, a bill aimed specifically at the Catholic Church, which would remove the authority of the bishop and pastor over individual parishes and put a board of laymen in their place. Yes, we're asking the same questions you are (Where does the legislature have the authority to do this? Isn't this a blatant violation of the First Amendment?), but we assure you that this is not a hoax.

We need as big a turnout as possible for the public hearing on Wednesday, especially from non-Catholics. As Ben Franklin told the Founders while they were signing the Declaration of Independence, "either we hang together or we will all hang separately." Legislators need to understand that this bill is an attack on everyone's religious liberty.

I’m looking forward to this bill passing. And no doubt it will spread across the country. Let’s hope they include ALL religions and not just this one.

By passing it they will no doubt piss a lot of people off, me included. But at some point the line will be crossed and all hell is going to break out.

"Does the Catholic Church receive State/Federal funds?"

Why would that matter? Governments often fund church run charities.

Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Sure, just like everything else that has pissed off a lot of people and caused all hell to break loose....

Why doesn't this Nazi committee try this on Islamic Mosks instead?

constitutionality of the existing law that sets different rules for five named separate religions....

Strange statement. Does anyone know which 5 named religions are and what existing laws they are discussing?

You are probably right. However, if Christians would fight like men then another result would occur. Besides the attack on Christianity is merely one facet of the attack against Western Civilization. Our enemies are nothings and for that reason I’m constantly amazed at their success to date.

When the government gives out money, it comes with the tactic agreement that the government has permission to dictate to the receiver.
The auto industry bailouts is a case in point.
If the government is dictating to churches in which it has no financial interest, there’s a problem.
That’s why it matters, and that’s why I asked.

I have faith in my fellow Americans.

And if not then we will become a godless nation and doomed for generations to slavery.

We are the last best hope for freedom on earth

Connecticut vs Catholic ChurchMarch 9th 2009 The state of Connecticut is specifically targeting the Catholic Church for a mandated restructure!

From the Corner via Liberty Girl:

The [Democrat]-controlled Judiciary Committee has introduced Raised Bill 1098, a bill aimed specifically at the Catholic Church, which would remove the authority of the bishop and pastor over individual parishes and put a board of laymen in their place. Yes, we’re asking the same questions you are (Where does the legislature have the authority to do this? Isn’t this a blatant violation of the First Amendment?), but we assure you that this is not a hoax.

If the legislature can replace a bishop with a board of laymen in the Catholic Church, they can just as easily replace the governing lay structure of Congregationalist or Baptist churches with someone set up as a bishop. In fact, it was resistance to such government interference in the internal life of the church that gave birth to several of our most historic denominations. Thanks to this awful bill, our generation must now rise up to defend those hard-fought victories for religious liberty that were won for us by our ancestors.

Announcement via Hartford Courant.

Tabled so that Attorney General could examine the bill's constitutionality. The interesting thing is that the withdrawal was requested by proponents of the bill.
