LDS missionaries help residents escape burning building

Elder Joe Bolke, from Cottonwood Heights, is a University of Utah student serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Fenton, MI. But what he's known best for now is his role in an apartment fire rescue.

In the early morning hours of Friday, Feb. 13, Elder Bolke's companion woke him to show him the flames. The missionaries dashed outside without their shoes into the cold Michigan night and started yelling to get others awake.

Their quick thinking helped save lives at the apartment complex, including a mother and her 7-week-old baby who had to be lifted from a second-floor balcony.

As they worked, the building's vinyl siding dripped melting plastic down.

His father says Elder Bolke's not the type to brag about his role in the rescues.

Evert Bolke says his son, Joe, is an Eagle Scout who was always a good kid. "I never had to worry about him getting into trouble," he remembered.

Joe graduated from Brighton High School and plans to return to the University of Utah to study chemical engineering after his mission wraps up in June.

Evert found out about the fire in a phone call with very little details, around 7:30 the morning of the fire. His stake president called, telling Bolke, "Your son, Elder Bolke and his companion have been involved in an apartment house fire. They're OK."

But what the stake president didn't say was that Elder Bolke and his companion were already being hailed as heroes. Evert found that out after he started searching for more information about the fire on the Internet.

He says he's proud of all of his seven children, including his youngest, who lost everything he had in Michigan in the fire. "All they had was their nightclothes and their cell phones," he said.

The Bolkes packaged up a box of things their son couldn't get in Michigan, but it sounds as though the missionaries are getting plenty of help from the community and the relief society in the town where they are serving.

“So whenever you give to the poor, don’t blow a trumpet before you like the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets so that they will be praised by people. I tell you with certainty, they have their full reward!”

Matthew 6:2

Great actions. Why trumpet it around that THESE ARE LDS!?

Do you “blow this trumpet in the streets” of FreeRepublic so that LDS will be “praised by people”?

“I tell you with certainty, they have their full reward.”

Thank you bias RM who ever you are?

This was a closed door communication until one of your own (svcw) make a stink about it!

It was the RM who changed it from an LDS Caucus to N/A
You can’t have it both ways

Yet, again you do not read posts to you, you read what you want out of these posts.

I was asking about why this NEWS story was posted in the Religion Forum and closed to comments.

I said these were fine young men but was curious as to why it was made an issue that they were lds.

one of your own (Wiping tear from my eye from laughing)

Others passed by they respect a close door communication why didn’t you?

Oh well ti seems some calling on the earth is to be spiteful

All I asked was why when this was a news story and it was because it was from a news source not a religious publication that it published in the Religion Forum. News stories do not generally close comments. And I asked why.

Again I praised the young men. They did a great thing, but I was curious as to why being lds was an issue. I have seen many stories about many brave people and their religious affiliation is not in the headline.

If you find it offense to ask why there is nothing I can do about it.

I would say take it up with the mods but you already have.

But one has to wonder why when these young men are praised for doing a good thing you get so testy when people question why you wanted it closed to comment and why lds was made an issue.

And I am not spiteful, I have no desire for you to be hurt, otherwise I would be hard pressed to lift you up in prayer.

I thank you for your input roylene this isn’t how it started out see post #4 , 8, 13

Sorry but this person has shown up on many threads of the LDS just to disrupt and this was a closed thread and becaues this person keep picking at it, it was moved from a religion *caucus to this forum

*Caucus closed communication so when it got moved an open up, another co-heart came along accusing the LDS tooting their own horn.

There is a group of them who everyday seeking out LDS threads or if none put their own up for sport!

yes indeed there sure is a pattern going on daily!:)

Glad you recognized the climate the LDS is experiencing many choose to ignore that there is any anit LDS.

I don't think any of the anti-Mormon posters would claim they aren't biased against Mormon theology. Biases are not necessarily bad.

When you stop posting only stories that cast Mormonism is favorable light, people might take you more seriously. Have you ever posted a story about a Mormon leader sexually abusing children? You do know that it happens, don’t you?

I don’t go to other caucus to disrupt their close session, nor look for negativity on other religions, I leave that for liberals and sick idiots!
