email | February 22, 2009 | Lisa Feroli

We have secured the Ampitheater at Lake Eola for Saturday, March 21 from 12:00 - 2:00. Bud Hedinger is on board. We have been contacted by Lloyd Marcus who is a conservative, patriotic singer, song writer and entertainer. He is on board as well and will be performing. There are many other plans in the works. So clear your calendars and spread the word. We are going to have a Tea Party! We are going to need to ask for some help with funding the event. We will be forwarding to you our website link which will be completed this afternoon. The website will have all needed information, updates and Paypal account for contributions for the event. Thank you for your patience and support!

Thanks to you both! Not far for us at all ... ;-)

A few details for all:

Address: 195 N Rosalind Avenue
Orlando, FL 32801

Park Phone: (407) 246-2827

Looks like a nice park with "parking" on the south side by the ampitheatre. ;-)

Good afternoon lovely lady.

As you know, I and the First lady have been known to show up at a FReep or two. Anytime is a good time to get together with you and the central chapter. To quote Chrissy Mathews, gives me a tingly feeling down my leg.

Ick, I wish I hadn't typed that last sentence...

The parking is on-street parallel parking and there's not a whole lot of it. If we have numbers like I'm guessing will show up I'm betting you'll have a hard time finding a spot unless you get there super early or are lucky, in which case I'd recommend buying a lotto ticket that day :).

I believe the closest parking garage is across the street from the downtown library, which would be a short walk. I think anyone planning to attend would do well to research parking here . And the Lymmo, which is a free bus that circles downtown Orlando on a regular (10 minute or so) schedule here .

Here in Vermont there is a growing coalition looking at having a Taxpayers Action Day rally the weekend of April 15th outside of a federal building.

By the way, the ampitheater, which I believe is where everything is going to be, is as the west end of the park along Rosalind Ave.

“By the way, the ampitheater, which I believe is where everything is going to be, is as the west end of the park along Rosalind Ave.” ~ Roos_Girl

Here is some information that FReepers who are planning to attend this event can use. Please ping your lists:

City of Orlando Parking Options
http://www.cityoforlando.net/transportation/parking/garages/garage_options.htm

Map of Lake Eola: http://www.yelp.com/biz/lake-eola-park-orlando

Some of us parked in a public parking garage located at the corner of Rosalind St. and Robinson St., the last time we held a FReep at Lake Eola.

The other nearby parking garage is at the Library:

Location: Orange County Library System
Address: 101 E. Central Blvd.
Orlando, FL 32801

Directions: From Florida’s Turnpike: Take the Florida Turnpike to exit 265 (Orlando/Titusville) and merge onto SR-408. Take exit 10B toward SR-527/Orange Ave. Turn right onto S. Lucerne Cir. E. Turn right onto S. Orange Ave./FL-527 N. Continue to follow FL-527 N. Turn left onto E. Central Blvd.

See http://www.cityoforlando.net/transportation/parking/garages/garage_options.htm for parking options.
From that list, the closest garage is the Library Garage. (It is called “Library Garage” but it does not belong to the library.) A couple of blocks away on Central there is Central garage; a few blocks away there is a Courthouse garage. (Free Lymmo bus is available to go from there to the library.) There is also street metered parking.

I-4 West - Coming from the north including Altamonte Springs
Exit I-4 at Highway 50. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left. Cross over the railroad tracks and make a right onto Orange Avenue. Take Orange to Central Avenue. Turn left onto Central. Travel two blocks east to the Library Parking Garage, just after you cross over Magnolia Street. Make a right into the garage and walk back to Magnolia to get to the theatre.

I-4 East - Coming from the south including the Attractions areas
Exit I-4 at Anderson Street, a left exit just after the exit for the 408. Follow Anderson east to Orange Avenue. Make a right onto Orange Avenue. Travel one block south and make a left onto Anderson. Make another left onto Magnolia at the next traffic light. Take Magnolia north to Central Avenue.. Turn right onto Central. One half block on the right is the entrance to The Library Garage, a few steps from the theatre.

408 East - Coming from the west including Winter Garden and Clermont
Exit at Orange Ave./Downtown. Continue down curving ramp to merge with East Lucerne Circle. Turn right (north) on Orange Avenue. Continue on Orange Avenue then bear right at “Downtown” directional sign which becomes Rosalind Avenue. Cross South, Jackson, Church and Pine Streets. Turn left (west) onto Central Blvd. (at the Orlando Public Library). Park in public parking garage on left side, 119 East Central Avenue.

408 West - Coming from the east including UCF and Oviedo
Exit Rosalind Avenue. Merge onto South Street, which is a one-way street. Turn right (north) onto Magnolia. After you cross Church Street you will see the theatre on your right. Travel one more block to Central ; make a right onto Central. One half block on the right is the entrance to The Library Garage, a few steps from the theatre.

How much does parking cost?

Parking is nominal at the Library Garage, between $.50 to $1 an hour. Sometimes there are also “Event Parking” rates which could be anything from $3 or more paid in cash upon entrance of the Garage.

Energy and money will be spent on this trip...is there no way to combine them?

I remember suggesting that a major FREEP be planned for our meeting. This is ready-made.

I imagine the Tea Party is going to be an all day or better part of the day event on Saturday. Most people will need to be driving home on Sunday and wouldn't be able to stay for another all day event like we're planning for the Conference.

While it would be great to have a Freep as part of our convention, I really don't see how the timing could be worked out doing it all in one weekend. Hopefully, since the two events will be a month apart people will be able to plan for both.

I agree!

***NOTICE***

The following is a "SUGGESTION". In no way is it my intention to undermine the efforts of those who have graciously stepped up to the challenge to coordinate such an event(s).
(IMO, FWIW, spending a day listening to speakers strategerize(sp) future plans and then going our own separate ways is a bit anti-climatic. And as 3D-Joy mentioned, Energy and money spent X's 2 will be pushing it for participants.)

Everyone could gather at a Friday night meeting place and work out details for the Tea Party. (I'll be getting the bullhorn tuned up and ready to go!).
At the gathering perhaps someone could speak as planned for the FR convention.

On the day of the party we meet for a brunch (breakfast/pre-party lunch) and have a speaker give their presentation. Once we've had chow and a FR pep talk we then motor (or walk!) to Lake Eola!

Following the Tea Party a Post FReep briefing with adult beverages would be a bunch of fun! We could have our last guest speaker reflect on the events of the day and what to plan for next!

There's my $.02 worth. Either way, I plan to be there!

Please feel FRee to FReep mail me and flame me there and not waste the bandwidth on this thread.

FRegards!

A great bunch of ideas! We’ll talk about them between now and then to work out the details.

In the meantime, here is a great article that Roos_Girl has already sent it to Lisa Feroli, who is organizing this event:

SOME ADVICE ON ... “TEA PARTY” PROTESTS,

SOME ADVICE ON FUTURE “TEA PARTY” PROTESTS, from a media producer who attended the Overland Park affair:

I attended the invigorating protest outside Congressman Dennis Moore’s Overland Park, Kansas office yesterday.

I hoped 10-15 souls might show up. I was thrilled to see hundreds. Here are some suggestions. I don’t really want my name used. Sadly, it could really hurt my business, which is already hurting.

As a professional media producer, here are my concerns:

1. Incoherent message - the signs were all over the place. There were lots of agendas. That’s fine. The color and signage look good on TV.

But, when it came to the microphone - the overall message was tepid and unsure.

2. Create a theme - like “We want Senator So-and-So to resign for voting for this bill.” Or, “We want the Stimulus Repealed!” “Start Over.” Have a definitive purpose to your Assembly. A central theme will also help public speakers to focus. And don’t be afraid to personalize this. Put it on your Senators, Congress people, and the President. That’s what they are doing to anyone who objects.

3. Speakers not prepared for the media - the organizer was asked to name some specific objectionable items in the stimulus. She couldn’t do it. I doubt many of us could.

If you are an organizer, or the “face” of the event - take an hour to prepare. You don’t need to know everything about the stimulus. Just find 2 or 3 things - hard facts - you can point to and credibly say - these are wrong, wasteful spending items. Or, these items grow government, not the economy. It is critical.

4. Pass out talking points, just in case Joe or Jane Protestor gets buttonholed by a reporter.

5. This is all about image. If we don’t present the media with a professional, organized and, unfortunately, scripted image, they are going to make their own, and it won’t be favorable.

6. Recruit some help to pack the area around people being interviewed for background. God love the guy in the crazy Uncle Sam suit, and we certainly need the Minute Men, but these folks will quickly become THE story because they are colorful or controversial i.e., Good TV. Welcome their support. Maybe give them a minute on the mic. But I recommend trying to pack in mainstream, boring looking, and diverse Americans around the camera. No offense to anyone. Anytime a TV camera comes out, a certain number and type of attention seeker will flock to it. Now is the time for Grandma and Grandpa, the Plumber, the Young Executive, and the Homeschooling Mom to flock to the camera as background. Don’t be shy. Remember, how do you want your cause to be presented by the media? As crazies? Or as Concerned Neighbors?

7. Have an Agenda and a Time. We’re going to Assemble at this Time. We’re going to have a Sign-In Table. We’re going to have a Sign-Making Area. We’re going to have speakers at 10:30. We’re going to March to the Senator’s Office at this time and demand she resign. We’re going to end with Chants, and a Call-to-Action for the next Protest. That, and Protestors want to know what’s going on. If they become unsure, they leave. Organization wins, and it also intimidates the opposition. And the opposition is going to start showing up.

8. Share the Day’s Agenda with the Media. You have to create your own press. The event in Overland Park was HUGE, but only one news station came out to cover it, and there’s not even a photo in today’s Sunday paper. Sell it to them. They love good stories.

That’s it. I hope this helpful. These things are only going to get bigger, and people need to realize that a great responsibility comes with this wonderful opportunity. Get a Message. And Get It Out.
