Mexico is one of two countries that "bear consideration for a rapid and sudden collapse," according to a report by the U.S. Joint Forces Command on worldwide security threats. The command's report, which contains projections of global threats and potential next wars, puts Pakistan on the same level as Mexico. "The Mexican government, its politicians, police and judicial infrastructure are all under sustained assault by criminal gangs and drug cartels. Any descent of Mexico into chaos would demand an American response based on the serious implications for homeland security alone." In recent weeks, the Department of Homeland Security and former U.S. drug czar Barry McCaffrey issued similar alerts about Mexico.

Absolutely. Many laughed at Tancredo and Hunter in the Republican primaries. They may soon wish they could have that opportunity again!

It's an arguable point. It's entirely possible that we are now joined at the hip. We depend on illegals to work our agriculture and factories and washrooms. Mexico depends on money mailed south - its about 35% of their GNP. Cut off the back and forthing and both countries suffer. I think you might enhance the possibilities the drug cartels take control of Mexico if you close the border. The government would most certainly collapse.
But the drug trade - it will just take to sea and sky, only a bit more than they already do.
I heard a Stratfor report the other day that estimates 50% of major crime in our major cities is from drug cartels - mostly Mexican and other Latin countries.
Eventually, we will need to become very repressive to put a stop to it - not likely in the next four or 8 years.
Exactly right. They’ve been exporting their problem people to us to the point where OUR economic infrastructure is at the breaking point. And as Lou Dobbs has said repeatedly, 96% of the methamphetamines and the majority of cocaine arriving in the U.S. come from the Mexican drug cartel.
We can’t even stop it in maximum security prisons, so I don’t know what all is planned for those of us not presently in such institutions. But I’m sure it’s going to be a doozy, one small step at a time.
The fact that Northern Mexico is an anarchic narco state is the direct result of the US WOD, like it or not. coloradan is completely on target.
And apparently, gosh durn it, it’s worth it!!
By the loss of what’s left of our culture and its social and economic infrastructure. Of course, some who don’t even know what’s already happened with the illegal invasion won’t notice anything.
Mexico is a virus and we should have taken care of Mexico a long time ago.
Where to start. The drug trade and the use of drugs is very destructive.
I guess with a strict libertarian world view, we would have no standards. “As long as what I do doesn't hurt anyone else “directly”, then it's ok”. Open drug use, prostitution, etc.
That is a simplistic, destructive mindset. A nation and culture must have moral values to survive and thrive. When moral standards are absent, chaos and destruction reign.
Some things are just wrong. Drugs destroy peoples lives, mentally and physically.
Moral standards have to come from somewhere. My moral standards come from trying to live a Biblical point of view. I fail often, but I keep trying.

If that was the case, then we better darn well secure our border, and stop this poison from entering our nation.

True. But we’ve chosen instead to pay ever-increasing taxes for bankrupt public school districts, insolvent hospitals, social welfare costs, and the horrendous human and economic costs of the drug cartel.

Yes, right on target. It seems some people don’t understand the concept of unintended consequences.
Mexico may be just the ticket that we need to turn out of this depression - we invade Mexico, a convenient little war gets the economy going in both nations - the people in Mexico like us, so we get cooperation in cleaning up the nation. Mexico buys a ton of technology and equipment from us and puts us to work making it. We set up the Mexican government as an entity friendly to their poor. In exchange, think of all the thousands of acres of ocean-front property heretofor prohibited to American ownership...the building out of tourist spots will keep Mexico’s economy humming for decades, the airlines will be fat as cows flying people back and forth and everyone will be happy campers. And, we’ll have control of the border all the way from Belize to Guatamala.
