Allegra is the fountain of all knowledge when it comes to socks.

Seriesly, man, don’t question her expertise in this area. She will mess you all up with sockitude.

As a matter of fact, since Allegra is the socks goddess, the first pair of socks I knit will be hers.

Now I just gotta learn to knit socks.

How does a gal from Texas/Virginia and now calling Iraq her ‘second home’ come to be such a solon of socks?

I wish I could find the thread that started it all. Allegra, did that get pulled or something?

Well, 'bout two years ago, a couple of FReepers dared me to put up a really useless vanity and we had a bet. I bet that it would be pulled and they bet that it would stay. So, I postd the most useless thing I could think of. "I'm Wearing New Socks Today." I even had keywords like "Hanes," "NoHoles" and "Crews."

It was up for about 30 seconds. (I won the bet.)

So, the next day, someone put up a vanity that wasn't quite as silly, but we hijacked it and turned it into a sock thread anyway. I'm reasonably sure that you were one of the participants. :)

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I’m 15 miles west of Port St. Lucie.
Lots of deer in the last two weeks, otters, bobcats, and the rabbit population is shrinking.

“Computer problem delays US Airways flights”
http://www.usatoday.com/travel/flights/2009-01-29-us-airways-computer-glitch_N.htm

NEW YORK (AP) — US Airways said Thursday its computer system is returning to normal after a cut cable delayed about 100 flights.
The airline said that a fiber-optic cable was accidentally cut near one of its Phoenix data centers, affecting its flight dispatch and airport computer systems. US Airways said no flights were delayed for more than an hour because of the problem.

The carrier said its systems were coming back on line Thursday evening, but customers were advised to check with the airline about their flight’s status.

US Airways has about 3,100 flights a day to destinations in the U.S., Canada and international cities.

I wish we lived that direction, when we have gone that way it feels more like home (TX) than this place. Anyway, I’ve never seen a bobcat up here. In fact, I’ve never seen any deer either. I do see those little rabbits out at the wetlands, the occasional raccoon and possum. But otherwise, it’s pretty much birds, reptiles, bugs and of course Snow Birds! ;)

You once stated in a post to me that you were raised in Texas and for a time, Virginia.
How can I trust you to give wise, prudent advice on socks when you forget where you grew up? LOL

A little inaccuracy there, my FRiend, but your memory is good. :)

I grew up as a Navy brat all over the world and one of those places was Virginia. In fact, we were there twice, once in Norfolk and once in the DC area.

I got to Texas as fast as I could when I was a young adult. It's been the only place I had lived for more than four years in my life until...umm...{cough!} recently.

I'll have to humbly, kindly and yet firmly ask, where is the inaccuracy of my statement?

And for your information, tonight I will drink a pint of Murphy's Irish Stout to your safety, health, and happy return to the United States.

I wasn't raised in Texas. I was already done raised by the time I got there. :-) You were very close though, and I'm impressed.

And for your information, tonight I will drink a pint of Murphy's Irish Stout to your safety, health, and happy return to the United States.

I appreciate that very much and wish I could be there to raise a glass (speaking of raising things) with you. I hope to come home for good sometime soon.

Exciting day here day tomorrow - Election Day. We're all pretty much hunkered down and ready to witness freedom. It'll be the second time around for the few of us old hands here.

What would you say is the overall perception of America that Iraqis have? And have any locals commented, good or bad, on Obama being our new president?

All of the Iraqis I know wanted McCain to win because they knew he'd look out for their interests.

They don't feel confident about Obama and think he'll pull the plug and let Iran start hassling them and try to take over. They're tired of war since they've been at war for so many years under Saddam Hussein, starting with that eight-year fiasco with Iran in 1980.

The impression I get is that pretty much every Iraqi who is not aligned with either the Saddam loyalists or the Mehdi Army Sadr-scum likes and appreciates us Americans. They are a warm, generous and friendly people and much more socially western-friendly than most of their neighbors.

You bring something up I believe very important, that is the suffering endured by the Iraqi people, as you've stated, for so many years.
This seems to not get mentioned often here, or if it is not in-depth, as the focus is on our troops.
Now surely we should focus on our troops, of whom words cannot describe how much they're admired and appreciated, but also shine the light on those we went to war to aid and protect, the Iraqis.
And thank you again, (you've stated this before), for putting the 'human face' on the war, and pointing out how genuinely nice the Iraqi people are. They indeed deserve our admiration and respect, not our patronization.
You're a very nice lady, Allegra. (I'd have said 'sweet' but don't want to appear fresh)
