At this point, buying a hybrid makes as much economic sense as buying a gas-guzzling SUV did last summer.

“Hybrid is important if it’s affordable and it carries the right image,”
Interesting admission.

Dear AP Staff writer,
I will buy what I damn well please with MY money as I see fit. No matter what "sense" you may make of it.
Sincerely,
RB.......
LOL! Not me, the Prius looks way too liberal for me. My eyes turned toward the SUV's that were selling for a song. I bought a Suburban in early October, so far its my favorite car among about 8 that I have owned in my life.
I look DOWN on people who own hybrids.
But I guess I’m not the one liberals are trying to impress.
Will it make sense when obama imposes a $3 a gallon federal tax on gas?
Like most guys, I would like to have at least one of everything automotive. You know, a garage like Jay Leno's. But as a practical matter, I'd have little to no use for an SUV. Something like a Jeep Patriot might be good but a large SUV would be a waste.
But for people buying SUVs there was a great buying opportunity when SUVs were bleeding dealers' bank accounts just sitting on their lots. For people who believe gas prices will again rise, hybrids may be a similar bargain in a few months.
I drove a CRX for 13 years - all the way through college and beyond. After the second time my back went out, my physical therapist asked to see my car so he could adjust the seat for me. When he walked out to the garage with me and saw my "ride," he went, "Oh, I see the problem now. Forget the seat, you have to get a new car."
However, it did get 42 mpg. Before it was considered "cool" to do so. But I think all the money I saved on gas was put into chiropractic.
The total lifecycle of a Prius says it pollutes more than a Hummer H2.
That's one possibility for rising gas prices. I think the past forty years have shown us other possibilities for rising prices and/or shortages. Car buying decisions are much a crapshoot.
Years ago, Honda made a Civic that got something in the neighborhood of 50 mph. What the hell happened to that?
Are they actually planning on doing that? I seem to remember hearing it being kicked around in Washington or Oregon, I forget.
How are they planning on tracking your miles? Something built into the car (On-Star like system) or something you attach to the car (E-Z pass)? What do they do about out of state drivers?
LOL! 50 MPGallon.
Anything but clean, better mileage, cheaper to make gasoline you can put right in your car. It’s the “green economy.”
Maybe it started shaking too much. Years ago my brother had a Nissan Sentra, and he used to get pissed at me for going over 70mph. Man that thing would vibrate.
/sorry just playing around
Did you carry anything in a back pocket as a guy would carry a wallet? A co-worker with a bad back was told by his doctor to move the wallet to his front pocket and that did wonders for him. When I reached the age for the medical diagnosis of "Sciatica, welcome to the club.", I also moved my wallet to the front pocket and it did help.
“Years ago, Honda made a Civic that got something in the neighborhood of 50 mph. What the hell happened to that?”
People’s tastes demanded more creature comforts, and that added weight. You can still get almost 40mpg with a standard Civic. Given that, why would anyone buy a hybrid?
