In the discussion that followed we pointed out that it was the office of the Czech PM who stated that the Israeli action was defensive, but that the Czech FM sounded much less solid in his support of Israel.

sadly it turns out that Andy was right. There appears to have been a turf fight between the Czech Foreign Ministry, aided and abetted by France and other EU countries, and the PM's office. As can be seen from this link the FM won this fight:

Despite some resistance by the Czechs the EU position is just as anti-Israel, anti-western as always. (Actually there are now two EU groups on their way to the Middle East to help Hamas. The little Napoleon himself (Sarkozy) and a group consisting of the Swedish, Czech and French foreign ministers.)

Me thinks luck will have nothing to do with it.

Perhaps it could be a good thing for Israel to have someone in Washington who lacks respect to the point of being dissed by other countries.

Doubtful. Unfortunately, he has badly mismanaged his campaign, in essentially the same manner as John McCain, by attempting to "reach across the aisle" to his enemies, alienating his base, and thus blurring the distinction between him and his opponents.

I believe the current Israeli offensive is merely a cynical election ploy by the Kadimites to placate the electorate and look tough before the election in order to knock-out Netanyahu. Once the election is safely past they'll agree to another appeasement agreement and try to kick the can further down the road...

Unfortunately, a critical mass of the Israeli populace, collectively speaking, have gone just as insane as we Americans.
