A family friend says Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died. She was 81.

Andrew Freedman says Kitt died Thursday of colon cancer and was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.

I remember when Eartha gave Lady Bird a piece of her mind at the White House (biting the hand that invited her); it was a shot heard round the world in early ‘68.

The main thing wrong with what Kitt did there was to unload on Lady Bird when she should have directed her ire at LBJ himself. Lady Bird had no control or say-so over the mismanagement of the war by her husband. In fact, she deserves a special place in heaven for suffering and enduring a lifetime with that evil bastard...

This is the woman who publicly insulted Lady Bird Johnson to her face in the White House.
While at an informal tea with with the First Lady and others the small talk turned to teenage crime. When Lady bird wondered why teens were commiting crimes Kitt shot off her mouth and said that they were commiting crimes so they would not get drafted and go fight in Viet Nam.

From the NYT (Aug 24, 2004):
It seemed the perfect opportunity to ask about politics. Ms. Kitt, after all, made headlines in 1968 when she had lunch at the White House with LADY BIRD JOHNSON and criticized the United States' involvement in Vietnam. Iraq is another story.

"I don't believe in war, because I think man is civilized enough to have a very strong debate," Ms. Kitt said. "Leaders should debate and discuss before we rush into war. It may have been too much of a rush job. But now that we're there, we have to support our boys."

She discussed BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, who does anti-Bush concerts.

"I think that Springsteen is playing into the hands of the enemy," she said. "I think that it is wrong for us to stand on a stage where people have paid to hear us sing or play an instrument and entertain them -- it is the wrong place for politics. But if you ask me a question, if I was in the dressing room, I would give you an opinion."
and the Chicago Sun-Times (October 12, 2008):
"If he does go through that door into the White House, he's not carrying one race of people with him, but all races of people with him.

Because I have always felt that due to the biracial blood I have inside my body, everybody belongs to me, and I belong to all people.

I have never identified myself as black, white, pink or green. I'm an entertainer and thank goodness that has allowed me to pass through the boundaries of many worlds and many cultures.

If Obama becomes president he become president of all colors or all worlds. ... I've never felt I belonged to a race or a color. I belong to the race of people and that's the way I identify myself -- and hope Obama does too."

Yes, Lady Bird was a truly good woman. I'm sure she had no idea what she was getting into when she married LBJ - just thought he was her last chance.

Our kids remember her as the voice of Yzma, the evil administrator in The Emperor's New Groove. She was great, and the part was made even funnier by her interaction with Patrick Warburton as Kronk, her 'assistant'.

Eartha Kitt was biracial, hoodathunkit?

It’s good to read that she supported the troops in Iraq, tho. Apparently unqualified support, IMO.

Good for her! I long for the day when we all "self-identify" as "Earthling."

She was hot as Catwoman, too.

Now that Van Johnson and Eartha Kitt have passed on, there are only nine old-time Batvillians left (I think):

Right?

That’s how my children first learned of her. As Yzma. Then Holes. They liked her a lot. When I told my 14 year old that Eartha Kitt died his mouth dropped.

My FIL was a career Secret Service Agent assigned to Lady Bird's detail.

I wish I could remember the exact details of the story, but apparently, when LBJ died, it was late in the afternoon. The protocol was to have him declared dead by a certain doctor before he was moved (I assume emergency personnel had tried to revive him) and the Dr. would not be able to make it to the ranch until the next morning.

That night, the Secret Service Agents assigned to keep watch over the body, ordered a pizza and placed it on his chest while they partook of it.

So long Lyndon, you were a sorry bastard.

A friend of mine once said I was lucky, because I often forgot to identify people by color, but I do by attitude. Many times I will be at work and get into a discussion about how I cannot stand the way certain people act that come to certain concerts. I would say “ghetto”, but I have heard that it raises ire to say that. I just notice that attitude, otherwise, I rarely see skin color.
