A Roman Catholic priest has told parishioners they should confess if they voted for Barack Obama because the president-elect supports abortion.

The Rev. Joseph Illo says his parishioners at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Modesto shouldn't risk losing their "state of grace" by receiving communion sacrilegiously. He delivered the message in a Nov. 21 letter and during mass.

Every priest in the country should be saying this and those who are offended are free to leave.

Absolutely. Illo sounds like a Nigerian last name, btw. There are a lot of Nigerian priests in CA and other Western states.

About time American religious leaders stopped pandering to the world’s opinion.

World’s opinion once thought that slavery was ok too.

Nigerian clergymen have a moral clarity that often seems absent in the west. The Nigerian clergy in the Anglican Communion has been wonderful in their support of Anglican dioceses and congregations that are unwilling to follow the Episcopal Church’s apostasy.

Illo's Bishop, who most likely voted for Obama himself, disagrees.

It’s time for some of these bishops to go.

Agreed. By and large they are one of the, if not the, biggest problems in the Church but historically that has always been true; re Saint Athanasius and his comments.

This issue is NOT going away. When abortion supporting Catholics in the House vote for the Freedom of Choice Act, FOCA there will be those who will sell their immortal soul to their party. As my very wise wife always asks “Do they think the democrats will get them into heaven?”

Priests did the same (and passed out a text statement which was probably the same as in Fresno) in Reno.

The actual “message” is that if you support abortion you should go to confession; NOT if you support Obama you should go to confession.

Naturally, the press presents this in as anti-catholic a way as possible.

Let’s just home some wishy-washy social agenda Bishop or Archbishop does not force the Priest to recant.

The Catholic Church must stand strong and united against abortion and other sins, including homosexual activity.

Obesity and gossip aren’t too far down on God’s sin list, either. Anyone preaching against them?

Reverend Illo is doubly brave because he is a true African as well. I know a man from Cameroon and I wasn’t sure how I might address the election around him. I mean I’d be honest but I wasn’t sure what he would think so we haven’t discussed the matter. This man from Cameroon is actually a Doctor educated at Cambridge but still young and single he is only looking for his internship now.

Father Joseph Illo is correct here. Pope Benedict will soon be looking for new Bishops in California. Here’s a possibility!
