LONDON (AP) - A woman has told a British court she accidentally flushed her newborn down the toilet because she didn't realize she was giving birth. Claire Jones says she knew she was pregnant from an affair with a colleague but thought the pain she suffered in the early hours of Dec. 28 was from diarrhea.
Jones told a coroner's court in Cardiff, Wales, on Monday that she only realized what had happened when she saw a foot in the toilet bowl.
She said she tried unsuccessfully to revive the baby and then put the body in the trunk of her car.
The corpse was found in Jones' vehicle after she was arrested. She was given a suspended sentence for concealing the baby's birth.
The coroner's court is investigating the circumstances of the baby's death.
I don’t know, I have actually heard stories of it happening in the hospital but they could have been old wives tales.
The first I ever heard of it was when I was 17 and a girl I knew was having a child. She thought she had to go to the bathroom and got up to go and they came and got her. They told her that she could have the child in the toilet and told her that some had and they had drowned.
A few years later a drunk woman confided in me that she had miscarried into a toilet and she panicked and flushed it even though she took the time to see that it was perfectly formed.
There is that inconvenient thing call the umbilical cord. That, and sorry to be gross, didn’t she wipe? She would have (1) felt the cord; and (2) come away with all sorts of blood.
When I was a child there was a black woman who played on my mother’s softball team. She was pregnant and didn’t know it and she ended up dying of Toxemia.
I know a woman who was 5 months pregnant and didn’t know it, never felt anything and only found out because she finally went to the doctor because her periods were different than before. She wasn’t overweight though she did feel she was getting a little chubby.
A doctor described how it could happen on one of those Discovery health programs.
Early to mid labor did feel like bad diarrhea cramps. But then they got much worse and I asked for an epidural. LOL
Oh yeah and my DIL never had a labor pain with her first child, she just threw up bile every few minutes. She was absolutely shocked when she delivered her 2nd child because she didn’t know it was going to hurt that bad.
One of those programs showed a woman who didn’t believe she had given birth until they showed her the baby. She thought something terrible was happening to her, and that she was dying. So did her parents.
A public reprimand was hardly in order, Couldn't you have handled this with a FReep mail?
The first category is “General Interest”
You can check “News/Current Events”
And “Miscellaneous” and “Your Opinion/Questions”
Stay away from anything that has “Free Republic” in it.
For “Highlights” I believe you can use “Front Page News” if it is a very recent and very important story.
Otherwise “Extended News” or nothing in this category.
Remember you can only choose 4 from this “Topics” page.
If the article is pertinent to a certain region, you can click on the state the article is from or references.
These methods usually work for me. but sometimes I get smacked down too.
Usually they will just add and subtract various topics to conform to their standards.
Thank you Syncro! It said in red “required” under topics, so I thought the more the merrier!
I’ll just stick to Highlights and let it go at that.
Thanks again.
LOL, yea.
It would seem the more you check, the more it gets out there.
This is what it looked like:
Topics Comma-separated list of no more than 4 topics; or press "Choose" to select from list REQUIREDDon't limit yourself; if it is a news story do click on "News/Current Events"
But four's the limit.
It's best to try to guess what the mods want there.
In this case they changed the Topics to Miscellaneous; News/Current Events; United Kingdom
It's hard to read the minds of the moderators...
I really do appreciate this.
I can also appreciate the mods being aggravated at having to repeatedly move my stories if they are in the wrong place. But I wasn’t trying to “abuse” anything!
Thanks again.
She is lying of course, but will be found "Not Guilty By Reason of Ovaries."
It sounds like they really punished her though, citing her for "concealing a birth." What is the penalty for that? Probably less than jaywalking or a parking ticket.
Hey - it is only a baby. Millions of them are thrown in trash dumps and medical waste furnaces every year, so what is the big deal - right?
It looks like they really threw the book at her:
"She was given a suspended sentence for concealing the baby's birth."
How could anything that has fingers and toes NOT be a baby?
