‘Antimissile shield in Poland provokes Russia’ Italian PM says

Created: 13.11.2008 10:35

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi stated yesterday that the deployment of the US antimissile shield in Poland and the Czech Republic is a “provocation” against Russia.

“Let’s speak frankly: we believe that there have been some provocations against the Russian federation such as the project to deploy missiles in Poland and the Czech Republic,” Berlusconi said.

Italy’s PM reminded that the Russian president Dmitrij Medvedev’s response to that plan was to announce the deployment of missiles in – as Berlusconi put it – “the Russian enclave in the Balkans, Kaliningrad.”

According to the Italian PM, “putting the two arsenals against each other would be a mistake, which could lead to the destruction of the world.”

As another example of provocation against Russia, Silvio Berlusconi mentioned also acknowledging Kosovo’s independence, as well as “speeding up the process of entering NATO by Ukraine and Georgia.”

Berlusconi called for a renewed agreement between NATO and Russia and for ending the arms race.

Meanwhile, US president-elect Barack Obama has said that the project to deploy elements of the US defence system in Poland and the Czech Republic will be continued only after the system’s reliability has been fully confirmed.

How does my being able to protect myself provoke anyone?

Anyone who isn't psychotic, that is.

I love the way that defensive weapons “provoke” those on the left.

May the flies of a thousand camels come to rest in their beer.

You got that right. Eastern Europe gets sacrificed every time for centuries now. Have no clue why they want to join the EU. They get treated like the red haired step children of Europe and always get gobbled up by Russia or its predecessors. I guess Russia needs a European mouthpiece so Italian guy thought he could rise to the occasion after his suntanned remark.

“the Russian enclave in the Balkans, Kaliningrad.”

East Prussia is in the Balkans? Did he learn his geography in an American public school?

Is it coincidence that Sarkhozy and now Berlosconi are speaking out against the missile defense at this time? They were pretty quiet before the economic crisis.

This notion that the deployment of short range missles demonstrates some sort of increased threat is absurd. It is not like Russia couldn’t move up hundreds of missiles on short notice anytime it wanted to. This makes about as much sense as Obama pledging to “take missiles off hair trigger alert” when long range missiles can be targeted or switched to a new target in a matter of minutes.

Well, Russia must intend on using its nuclear missiles as a threat against Poland/Europe in order to intimidate them.

That’s the only reason to object to a defensive system that allows one entity to be safe from attack from another.
