Bishop Carlson: Our witness must grow stronger (Statement on election results)
Diocese of Saginaw ^ | Nov 5, 2008 | His Excellency Most Rev. Robert J. Carlson

Posted on 11/07/2008 7:57:54 AM PST by BaBaStooey

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nov. 5, 2008

SAGINAW – Bishop Robert J. Carlson today released the following statement upon the historic election of Barack Obama and the passage of Proposal 2 in Michigan:

“First, I congratulate Senator Barack Obama on his historic achievement. I urge all Americans of good will to pray for our next president and others who govern our great nation so they may lead with wisdom and courage in difficult times. Today we should make a commitment to pray for our civic leaders every day.”

“Sadly, however, this moment in American history also comes with many setbacks in the continuing struggle to protect the rights and dignity of all people, especially the unborn.”

“Here in Michigan, voters chose to pass Proposal 2, a direct attack on human life. The fact that other states failed to pass initiatives that would have led to the greater defense of the right to life shows the great task that still lies ahead of us as people of faith.”

“The culture has chosen to reject the matters that are nearest and dearest to the Catholic heart. Therefore, our witness must grow stronger.”

“This election has shown that any child who is born in America has the opportunity to ascend to the highest political office in the land. We must continue to work and pray tirelessly for the day when every child who is conceived will have the right to live.”

“May God continue to bless the United States of America.”

It is amazing how often I have to bring up the Gospel passage “Love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you” on this forum.

The message of this election is that the road for the pro-life cause isn’t easy. It isn’t supposed to be easy. Heck, the pro-freedom group advocating the elimination of slavery had to take up arms and fight for it, so I guess anything short of that should actually be considered easy.

We simply cannot show up on election day, vote, go home, and then expect everyone else will have the same heart we do when it comes to life issues. But why only do so little? Do we pray for the pro-life cause? Do we fast? Do we spend hours in Eucharistic adoration? Or do we do so little that in the end we will have no choice but to take up arms and fight? Isn’t it possible that brother didn’t have to fight brother and state fight state 150+ years ago if only a few more people would have prayed a little more?

And finally, do we pray for those who don’t see it the same way? Do we pray that they will have a conversion? After all, they are human beings with souls just like the rest of us.

Pray that he is converted. And work so that he doesn’t get away with the horrible things he plans to do.

Catholics here in the U.S. MUST ADMIT that the Church has done a horrible job of explaining the Church's “social justice” teaching; such a horrible job that many Catholics readily accept socialism because of what they believe about that teaching.

Through that hook - “social justice” - the faithful are converted to the unfaithful; willing to accept abortionists because they are also going to “redistribute the wealth” to “the poor”.

Robin Hood did not steal from the rich. He took back from the corrupt local government the confiscatory taxes it had taken from the people.

Yeshua demanded NOTHING from Caesar; nothing for Himself; nothing for His followers; nothing for their mission; nothing for the people but that he quit taking what was theirs.

Bishop Carlson was formerly the Bishop of Sioux Falls, SD..we were sad to see him go.

Finally the Bishops are starting to recognize that liberal politicians some of them professing to be Catholic are the greatest danger to the unborn. Perhaps their case would be better made if they publicly excommunicated the likes of Pelosi, Biden and Teddy Kennedy for their support of abortion.

In case anyone was wondering, this is the land area covered by the Dioecesis Saginavensis. The parishes are also shown on the map.

The diocese, according to the best numbers I have (2004 numbers from catholic-hierarchy.org), is 19.3 percent Catholic.

Obama received 30,828 more votes than McCain in this territory (188,489 to 157,661).

Proposal 2 (embryonic stem cell research) went down to heavy defeat in the diocese, with Yes getting only 43.82% (Yes received 148,835 votes while No received 190,824). However, like many statewide elections, the liberal "Big 3" of Wayne, Washtenaw (Ann Arbor), and Ingham (East Lansing), voted massively Yes, and the rest of the state couldn't overcome it (the 41,989 vote gap in the Diocese was well overcome by the 117,000+ gap in favor of the proposal in Wayne County alone).

This notion of “redistribution” must be addressed as what it is. Mammon. Breaking of the ninth commandment. Wanting what others have. Jealousy. Greed. And if successfully done, breaking of the seventh commandment. Theft. Stealing.

Let’s face it. Poor people can be the worst offenders when it comes to the ninth commandment, because people want what they can’t have. And I think they get their theology twisted, because they see that rich man and they think about what Jesus said about the narrow gate. And they think that the rich guy is a glutton who doesn’t deserve what he has. And so they probably think they’re doing the guy a favor. When the fact of the matter is, unless we are in a position of responsibility to have to be concerned about the salvation of others (i.e. priests and bishops), we should really focus on ourselves and those we love, and our own salvation.

Some of us don’t understand that there may be a reason why God gives us little and gives that other guy a lot. They don’t understand that stuff is just stuff and quite frankly, none of us really owns any of it because it all belongs to God. They might just reject the idea of God altogether. It is really sad if you think about it.

That is why we all must pray for the conversion of hearts and minds in order to save souls.

I give you this gift:

Envy is the parent of greed; and socialism is founded on nurturing envy. There is nothing more greedy than socialism.

See, you have the ability to say something using much fewer words than I do. (I’ll try my best to not be envious.)

A friendly ping, and could you add the topic of Catholic to this post so it shows up on some radar screens? I’m afraid I don’t know how to do it. (I’ve always been more of a replier than a poster.)

Oh please - rarely do I ever use as few as words as necessary. Usually verbosity is my biggest writing sin - which my record here would tell you. But thanks, anyway. I’m glad that for once I could achieve that brevity.

It was really just an attempt on my part to be funny — yet another talent I really don’t possess.

Pray this one now!

~ PRAYER ~

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle
Be our protection against the wickedness
and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we  humbly pray,
and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host,
 by the power of God,
Thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits
who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
 Amen
