Unfortunately no state in the Union has ability of secession...not even Texas (contrary to what many believe).

How was this taken away? After the Civil War?

Yes, afer the Civil War a new “state” constitution was adopted which did not allow the state to secede but did retain the right to divide into 4 additional smaller states.
