I graduated in 1968, got a BA. Went to a large Catholic University in the Midwest.
My oldest daughter went to art school and would have needed to do a thesis if she had graduated. (She helped her senior friends with theirs)
My second daughter got an education degree at a private NY college. She had to write a thesis and graduated in 2002.
.
Thanks for the feedback.
I wonder if he might have been in one of the other schools of the University. I know when I went to the College there was a bias against letting transfer students in since they wouldn’t have completed the core curriculum courses that were required.
Most transfer students went into the School of General Studies instead, a catch-all school that accepted students for single classes in something they were interested in or allowed a full matriculation credit for transferees and graduated students from “Columbia”.
The general level of students was not of the highest caliber and certainly not equal to the College.
This system of ‘backdoor’ matriculation at Columbia Universtiy allowed some students to get the prestige of a Columbia degree without the work.
Most people outside the University never knew or understood the difference between a undergraduate degree from GS and the College/
I think (hope) your memory has mixed things up. The degree program you refer to was probably through the School of General Studies, not Columbia College which is the small selective undergraduate college that is a member of the IVY LEAGUE and also a part of the large University.
Columbia College has always been a highly selective and prstigious Ivy League school. Although I graduated many years before Obama I’d be surprised if they lent their name to such an undisciplined ‘external’ program which didn’t infuse the undergraduate with the required and famouns core curriculum of the College.
Your speculation is smart and informed and I shared it — but i can't prove anything yet — i do have a lunch meeting this week with someone who might be able and willing to tell me more... will post if they have something interesting to say.
IN RES: “BTW, does anyone know if Barry can understand Russian? His mother and father met in a Russian language class, if I remember correctly.”
