CLEVELAND, Tenn. — Bradley County’s registered voter list will likely top 60,000 before early voting begins next week.

A whirlwind month of voter registration was capped Monday with 407 new registrations, Elections Director Fran Green told county election commissioners Tuesday.

In the August general election the county had about 54,000 registered voters. As of Tuesday, that number was 59,891.

Ms. Green held up a tray of registrations and estimated about 500 were left to process.

“That will put us over 60,000, “ she said.

Election Commission Chairwoman Mary Frances Armstrong praised the office staff’s effort to handle the Monday mobs..

“They did one more fantastic job yesterday,” Mrs. Armstrong said. “The people who came in were pleased with the way they were being treated.”

With early voting beginning a week from today, the election commission met Tuesday to approve the list of election workers for the early voting sites.

There must be enough workers from their respective parties that the numbers are always balanced, Commissioner Harlen White said. Ms. Green then faces the challenge of making sure each voting site has the correct number of workers each day.

“There will always be last-minute calls from somebody who can’t work that day,” he said. “So some people will be scheduled for only a few hours and others will have more. That way there’s always someone she can call on.”

The commission will meet Tuesday, one day before early voting begins, to check a voting machine to make sure the ballot is right and to review the workers’ list.

60,000 registered voters is a high number in a county with about 72,000 residents who are age 18 and up...

Our local Election commission informed me that Tennessee takes precautions againt possible voter fraud that some other states do not...

For instance, while several states only check the last four digits of a SSN, Tennessee uses the whole nine digits of the number..

Felon files from the circuit court are used to catch any ineligible applications ...

And a signature on an application is treated as an affidavit..fraudulant signers are prosecuted...good luck with that...

Is this good or bad? Is ACORN trying to steal a solid R state, too?

Bradley County prides itself on being the most Republican County in Tennessee...

80% votes for the R candidate are not unusual..

Has ACORN et al been here ???

Dont know...

Anyone can get a bunch of applications and have a table at a mall...

or knock on doors...

or visit the college campuses...

Hopefully the new voters are genuine...

and conservative...

I haven't seen anything of ACORN in Bradley myself. Hopefully Polk (my Co.) will turn out for McCain. Fingers crossed. I feel like I'm the only one here that is not a Dem., but I can't see Polk going for the messiah.

2008 Primaries

Bradley County

Clinton - 66.9%
Obama - 26.3%
McCain - 27%
Romney - 14%
Huckabee - 51%

Polk County

Clinton - 68.1%
Obama - 14.5%
McCain - 31%
Romney - 11%
Huckabee - 47%

Well, i have been reading FR for months and because of this article decided to sign up to post a comment. I live in Bradley County and believe me, it is conservative all the way from the retired folks to the children in school. Cleveland is the self proclaimed buckle of the Bible belt. Obama will get very few votes here. ACORN would be run outta town most likely if they tried hustling up votes for bambi.

I don't think Obambi will get Hamilton either. Where there are some enclaves of liberalism in parts of Chattanooga, a good portion of the city and the surrounding suburbs are firmly republican, and definately anti-communist.

Wow, I’m surprised since Chattanooga is predominately black. I thought the majority of them were voting for Ocommie just b/c of his skin color...at least thats what the media would have you believe.

Well, I can't speak for all of Chattanooga but the black folks I know are pretty conservative.

According to the 2000 US census, Chattanooga is 36% black, but outside of the really poor neighborhoods (including public housing), there are many, many established black people within the borders of Chattanooga that do NOT fit the stereotypical mold of black people that the mainstream media portrays.

I must be hanging out in the wrong part of town then. I would have guessed Chattanooga was away over 36%....most of which weren;t so upstanding.

Yes, there's definately some "wrong parts of town" in Chattanooga, just like any other relatively large city. But there's a good number of neighborhoods that fall within the city proper, but are not bad neighborhoods at all. Chattanooga is much more spread out than many think. Several years ago, they annexed several small surrounding communities. In fact, the threat of being annexed is what ultimately brought the cities of Soddy and Daisy together into one city.

It's rather interesting in Chattanooga - it differs from my native Cleveland, Ohio in that there is more natural integration in a good number of middle-class neighborhoods. Much different than what I had expected. We had some decidedly black neighborhoods and some decidedly white neighborhoods in Cleveland, and the lines of demarcation were very strongly, if covertly enforced. Maybe this wasn't always the case, but it seems that 'Nooga is a good deal ahead of the curve in that respect. The blatent hatred isn't as strong here as, say, in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood, or in Detroit.

"Our local Election commission informed me that Tennessee takes precautions againt possible voter fraud that some other states do not... "

I was asking about that while I was voting in the primary. They told me that when someone dies, (at least in Williamson Co.) the election commission is informed within a month, so we don't have the dead democrats voting that so many cities have.
