Quote: It was one of the most substantive debates in recent presidential campaign history and John McCain won it.

The Arizona senator was cool, informed and forceful in Friday’s first presidential debate of the general election campaign.

He repeatedly put Barack Obama on the defensive throughout the 90 minutes session. Obama did little to ease voter concerns that he’s experienced enough to handle foreign and defense policy. That was his number one task Friday night and he failed.

Instead he was often his old meandering self, unable to state a quick, forceful position. Polls taken in the coming days should show McCain holding on to his trump card in the race - the view that he’s better equipped to be commander in chief.

McCain’s victory came at a good time for him in the race. He has fumbled around for a week on questions involving the economy and the federal bailout of Wall Street. His vice presidential candidate has become a running joke of late night comedy shows. As a result, his poll numbers sagged.

It has rattled Americans and between the two, McCain came off as the most reassuring. The crabby, grumbling, hotheaded McCain was nowhere to be seen. Instead we saw a calm, seasoned commander in chief . If you looked at your television and squinted slightly, you could better picture him addressing the country during a time of national crisis than Obama. Obama was often left flashing his smile and shaking his head at McCain.

For the life of me, I can’t believe voters will see Obama’s performance as “good”. It was horrific. Mac had detailed answers, Obama didn’t.

Seems the so-called undecideds were never undecided. They were RATS to begin with.

Wake up America!

Lucifer’s doing a triple lutz on his newly formed ice rink - and you’d better put the car inside as the winged pigs are very messy.... The Des Moines Red Star & Sickle saying McCain won...

And Yepsen’s article today: With decisive words, McCain keeps a step ahead of Obama - Oh my.

I was shocked to read this in the Register this morning. Yepsen has had Obama fever for quite a while. Obama does lead in the Iowa polls by double digits but he continues to run a lot of TV ads here. Even sent in the crack support squad of Demi Moore, Ashton Kutcher and the guy who played Superman(an Iowan)in the last movie to campaign for him yesterday.

"Me too!! Me too!! I have a bracelet too!! And the name on it is..... uhhhh.... uhhhhhh....

What a dumba$$.

That was the most telling part of the whole debate!

Note to NObama: If you are going to use the name of a fallen hero as a prop on NATIONAL TELEVISION then you better had REMEMBERED the name on that bracelet!

Again I say that NObamba is such a JerkA$$.

I didn’t see as obvious a victory for McCain. While he certainly didn’t lose, I wish he’d have discussed some obscure foreign policy minutia, at least briefly, that clearly contrasted the depth of his knowledge compared to Obama’s.

This editorial reflects what I saw. If people care about substance, McCain put Obama seriously off balance.

I grew up in Iowa and they have been trending “D.” for quite some time. For this liberal newspaper to state that Sen. McCain won is surely amazing. I don’t think though that Iowans will come to their senses any time soon and they are in the tank for ethanol like you wouldn’t beleive

OK, this article is a lie.

I just read a quote from Plugs Biden in which he said that McCain’s loss in the debate was “fatal loss”.

Now, you’re trying to tell me McCain won ..... this is all so very confusing. Plugs has been a Senator since 1812 so he should know, right?

</sarcasm>

“leftists waking up this morning to realize Obama got his clock cleaned...”

Meanwhile, Over at KOS, EVERY SINGLE DIARY is saying that Obama walked away with it last night. (At least the ones that don’t get censored by the Thought Police!!)

I was born and raised here, and still live here, but the Iowa I loved is gone. Decades of control by our government educational bureaucracy and the NEA have reduced Iowa to a declining backwater of safety-pin socialism, largely peopled by sour, loudmouthed mediocrities.

My soldier son is not coming back, because there is nothing here. Nothing. Let the dead bury the dead.

There is a lot of talk that no one can oppose Obama without being called racist. That to say anything bad about Obama is to be a racist. It hinders debate, no doubt.

But then an idiot like you, who obviously is racist, comes along and ruins it all for the rest of us.
