The Florida Rights Restoration Coalition and American Civil Liberties Union of Florida launched a voter registration campaign Monday targeting convicted felons whose rights have been restored.
''Our nation's future is at stake,'' say campaign ads featuring models with booking photos over their mouths. ``Your voice shouldn't be silenced by your past.''
Designed by a Miami ad agency, the ads will be displayed in minority communities across the state, including in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, and will be splashed on buses in English and Spanish.
Last year, Gov. Charlie Crist and the Florida Legislature changed the laws to make it easier for 112,000 felons to get their rights restored.
''There are tens of thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of people in the state whose rights have been restored and they may not know it,'' Howard Simon, executive director of the Florida branch of the ACLU, said Monday.
Workers and volunteers who register voters often say prospective voters tell them they are convicted felons and cannot vote.
Some activists believe the state has done little to inform such voters they have rights to vote. ''The kinds of efforts it would take to make it effective have not really been put in place,'' said Muslima Lewis, ACLU of Florida Voting Rights Project Director.
Gov. Crist recently issued an order for voter registration applications to be sent out with notices of civil rights restoration -- a move activists say comes too close to the deadline for voter registration, Oct. 6.
Lewis is pushing for automatic restoration -- so that rights are restored upon completion of incarceration or supervision.
''Everyone who can vote should vote,'' said Benjamin Burton, executive director of Miami Coalition for the Homeless and The League of Women Voters.
.
''People leaving prison will be our neighbors,'' said Brad Brown, vice president of the Miami Dade chapter of the NAACP. ``The very first step to being integrated is that right to vote. That is the first step to being a good neighbor and forming strong communities.''
The NY Post reported today that 150,000 convicted felons are now able to vote in Florida.
Don't be fooled by the ACLU:
The ACLU estimates that 115,000 people have had their voting rights restored but only 9,000 have registered
BS!
The ACLU and the Democrat Machine will vote every one of those felons in this fall election.
They vote the dead, the metally handicapped, the drug addicts, and even pets.
If you don't think this election is going to be stolen, you need to have your head examined.
YES! Vote democrate they only kill innocent life. You shouldn’t worry the rats and the ACLU will protect you.
Those in jail in the United States are no worse than the fat cats, American and Foreign, who are trying to pull a 700 billion dollar robbery in the USA, for bailouts on financial institutions. This is all the fault of globalists and not Democratic or Republican parties.
Crist, you’re doing a heckuva job [/s].
There will be massive fraud by the liberals at all cost. I will also bet on that!
The recent bailouts and this liberal fraud smells like a bag of crap.
Please don't worry so much about this. First, it only applies to non-violent felons. Violent ones have to go through a process that make take up to two years to have their rights restored.
Second the No Match No Vote law is in effect as of 9/1/08 The law at issue bars any Florida citizen from becoming registered to vote and voting with a regular ballot if the state cannot validate the applicant's driver's license number or the last four digits of the applicant's Social Security number, no matter how much identification the voter brings to the polls on Election Day. The process starts with an attempt to "match" voter information to other government databases, an error-prone exercise that often fails. For example, the Social Security Administration reports a 46% failure rate when trying to match voter registration applications. State officials admitted in a recent challenge to the law, Florida NAACP v. Browning, that typographical errors by election workers are responsible for most of the failures. If the state cannot match the voter registration records, many eligible voters who submit registration applications before the October 6th deadline to register may not be notified of the matching failure until Election Day, when they appear at the polls to vote. There, they will be forced to cast a provisional ballot, and that provisional ballot will only be counted if the voter submits a photocopy of his or her driver's license or Social Security card within 48 hours after the election, even if they already showed their driver's license at the polls.

So it is going to be pretty difficult to make it over all of the hurdles.
I saw Congressman Bwarway Fwarnk on the television yesterday.
He is trying ride into this crap storm like a white knight, but the truth is he and his fellow Democrats CREATED this nightmare by invoking laws that FORCED banks to give loans to people with terrible credit.
In short - it was a "gift' to minorities.
Now, we all have to pay (and pay, and pay, and pay some more.....)
Bob ‘ACLU’ Barr needs all the votes he can get. Why not through thuggery?
And give felons back the RKBA! The ACLU could have a two-fer!
We can not blame one party without faulting the other. George Bush is a Globalist, and so was Bush 41, Carter, Clinton,Obama, and most leaders in Congress. Check it out sometime. There is almost no one in either party that we can trust.
