WASHINGTON (AP) -- At least 49 offshore oil platforms, all with production of less than 1,000 barrels a day, were destroyed by Hurricane Ike as it raced across the Gulf of Mexico, and some may not be rebuilt, the Interior Department said Thursday.
It said in the latest hurricane damage assessment that the platforms altogether accounted for 13,000 barrels of oil and 84 million cubic feet of natural gas a day. There are more than 3,800 production platforms in the Gulf producing 1.3 million barrels of oil and 7 billion cubic feet of gas each day.
Most remain shut down.

49 destroyed, but not a drop of oil spilled. New oil drilling and production technology is first rate!

If you don’t pay attention, the headline sounds so horrible. All those platforms lost... oil and gas prices should skyrocket. (Ok, chicken little settle down!)
Then after you look at the numbers we are talking about 1.00% of the production of oil and 1.2% of the production of natural gas. Not nearly as bad as the news would let you believe.

And 49 out of 3800 is not even 1 1/2 percent.
Sort of buried for the reader to do the math.

These Washington bureaucrats want all kinds of back up systems for disasters. They force financial institutions and hospitals to have all kinds of contingency plans for a disaster, some of which are so unbelievable they are impossible to make work. But they won’t allow drilling anywhere other than the Gulf coasts of a few states, which concentrates our area of vulnerability to disaster! What idiots and hypocrites just in it for the environmentalist wackos.

Maybe the government should nationalize the oil industry as it just did the banking industry. I'm starting to wonder if Mc Cain can ACTUALLY do anything for conservatism if socialism is truly rising to the surface once again.

I heard damaged NOT destroyed.. Course the oil companys may get write offs if they are deemed destroyed.. I kind of think damaged is what they were.. Heck they made it thru several other hurrcanes already..

...and, of course, the media thinks most of the sheeple are too stupid to do even that simple equation. Creating panic and handwringing is their game.

AP didn’t bother to mention that there are about 3000 oil platforms in the gulf. Wouldn’t fit their template I guess.

Careful there...
In a time of universal deceit,
truth-telling is a revolutionary act
You've just mentioned a truth that a lot of our fellow citizens
just can't handle!!!
