Canadian doctor warns Sarah Palin's decision to have Down baby could reduce abortions
Sarah and Todd Palin's decision to complete her recent pregnancy, despite advance notice that their baby Trig had Down syndrome, is hailed by many in the pro-life movement as walking the walk as well as talking the talk.
But a senior Canadian doctor is now expressing concerns that such a prominent public role model as the governor of Alaska and potential vice president of the United States completing a Down syndrome pregnancy may prompt other women to make the same decision against abortion because of that genetic abnormality. And thereby reduce the number of abortions.

“Guess some of these guys are worried they wont be able to buy that sailboat they were looking at.”
I’ve seen that! The one with the blood red sails, right?
“Guess some of these guys are worried they wont be able to buy that sailboat they were looking at.”
Bingo!
Question for Obama in debate, “If a gene is identified that can tell a parent that a baby will grow up to be homosexual, is it OK with you for the mother to abort the baby?”
The socialists will eat themselves.
It’s nice that they ended the article with the pro-life point of view.
I really am tired of the people who say it’s irresponsible of the Palins to showcase their child. Oh, and the ones who say it’s irresponsible to get pregnant at her age. As if it’s a dangerous thing to have more Down Syndrome children around to deal with.
Like Mr. P says, there’s a special place in hell for these people.
Here in Canada the GOVERNMENT pays all medical costs. Children with genetic defects cost a lot of money. Obstetricians are basically required to order ultrasounds to check for the presence of these conditions. If they are found, there is strong counseling to abort
Women have the right to refuse the test but are not informed of its purpose and therefore don’t realize why the test is being done.
This is just one of the insidious side effects of socialized medicine. Pretty soon they will be denying coverage to those who don’t abort.
Too bad his mother didn’t abort.
My understanding is that people are lined up to adopt Down’s Syndrome babies...So this doctor “worries”?
The article didn’t mention whether the Canadian doctor actually practiced in Canada or not.
Good Lord, help us... these ghouls are expressing concern that - gasp! - ‘imperfect’ babies might be allowed to live! I hope my 8-year old ‘imperfect’ daughter never reads this.
This assclown should be on the front pages of American newspapers, showing us the kind of healthcare mentality that Obama would bring here, if he were elected. The NOW nags are doing a wonderful job of showing us all the only thing their movement is about.
I’m hoping you didn’t mean that, understand that you are angry, I am too. But the thing to do is pray for these people to change their hearts before it’s too late.
Bingo.
Also, more "defective" babies means fewer MRIs, etc. for the rest of the citizens.
And this is a problem because . . . . . . . ????
Until Sarah Palin came on the scene, I had no idea how prevelant this mindset is. It’s pretty shocking to me.
Yes, I know.
Eugenics ping...
Actually, no I did not mean that. I was trying to point out the guy wouldn’t even be around if his mother was as evil as he is. Your right...I should have phrased it better.
Even without abortion on the table, I’m on the fence where these tests are concerned. On the one hand, I think these tests could be helpful. If there is something wrong with the baby genetically it might be good to know to prepare the parents psychologically and to give the baby proper care at the time of birth.
But I am really concerned about the high rate of false results. Many parents spend months sick with worry only to find that the baby is fine.
I love my daughter’s thoughts on the topic. “If one set of parents can’t handle it, another can. If the baby isn’t *your* blessing, it’s somebody else’s. All life is perfect. Period!”
