For years, Juan Hernandez was a familiar sight at Joe T. Garcias strolling among diners and singing as a local troubadour.
His work there led to singing at weddings and recording albums in Spanish and English. He earned enough money to pay for graduate school and learned lessons that would help him through the years, said his father, Francisco Hernandez Sr. "His years as a troubadour gave him so much time working with people," he said. "He learned to win the appreciation of people."
That may have helped, as Juan Hernandez a lightning rod because of his passionate defense of immigrant rights has had a career that led him from teaching literature in Dallas to being the first U.S.-born person named to a Cabinet position in Mexico, under President Vicente Fox.
He is now the Hispanic outreach director for Republican presidential hopeful John McCain, an unpaid volunteer who has the delicate task of trying to gain Latino support for McCain while fielding criticism for his position on immigration as well as for the years he spent working for Fox.
"People tell him he should be in the Democratic Party," said his brother Francisco Hernandez Jr., a local attorney. "But he says the place you have to change hearts is in the Republican Party.
"He sees it as his mission. If he had $1 for every person in the McCain camp who . . . agrees with him, hed be set financially for a year. But some people throw rocks at him."
The McCain campaign and Hernandez will be in the spotlight more than ever during the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis-St. Paul, set for Sept. 1-4.

Looks like the McCain haters are getting a little nervous after last nights performance.
Because Obamma Lamma Ding Dong is just so bad ya have to vote for McLame. But you know he is going to screw us somehow some way as he has so many times in the past.
Open borders he says no, but amnesty was his thing early on and I don’t trust him.
*McCain haters are getting a little nervous*
The third party water carriers for Obama like to play
divide and conqueror.
They want the full Marxist in Obama.
Does anyone know if this is the same Juan Hernandez described in the current article?
According to Mr. Tancredo in the Insight Magazine interview:
I asked [Mr. Hernandez] about the purpose of the government agency he heads, since I had never heard of such a thing. He said its purpose is to increase the flow of Mexican nationals to the United States. I asked, Why?
"It serves Mexico's needs, he said, and ticked off a list of such things as remittances to Mexico of $10 billion a year, which is 30 percent of the Mexican GDP [gross domestic product]. It provides employment for an exploding population, it alleviates social instability due to rising unemployment and it provides training for Mexicans, ultimately repatriating those skills back to Mexico.
I responded to his final aim - repatriation of trained and skilled Mexicans back into Mexico - and asked, Then your government would oppose amnesty for the illegal Mexicans in the United States?
He cried, Oh no! We support amnesty totally. . . . by populating the United States with millions of Hispanics who are tied economically, politically and linguistically to Mexico, we are able to exert enormous influence and pressure on U.S. policy and its dealings with Mexico.
President Vicente Fox believes the U.S. border is a figment of the imagination. In fact, Fox and/or members of his government stated at one point that the borders of Mexico extend much farther north than currently drawn on the map.
Could this really be the same guy that McCain has tapped for his campaign's "Hispanic outreach director"?
I don't hate McCain and I agree that he did a good job yesterday. But this is what's so exasperating about McCain. He's got this election in the bag. He doesn't need creeps like Juan Hernandez to ruin his support among already-reluctant conservatives.
I know you'll probably see this article as proof the MSM is trying to split conservatives with wedge issues, but I see it as just more proof that conservatives are rightfully wary of McCain and it's good to have a reminder every now and then.
Same guy.
I do think it is fair to criticize Hernandez. McCain is a high risk for further illegal immigration promotion.
I hope something positive can happen on the Congressional side— particularly the Senate. That is where the issue really meets the road.
Sucker!
He's a politician telling you what you want to hear. Once he's elected, he'll do as he damn well pleases.
“”But he says the place you have to change hearts is in the Republican Party.”
Now there’s a nice little insult. Spit on that base again! Thanks, Juan, but my heart is just fine and illegal immigration is ILLEGAL, you moron.
Too bad everyone was watching the Olympics. Team McLoser can’t see the forest for the trees.
Do you have a URL for that, Maceman? I don’t know if it’s the same guy or not.
I haven't found the interview at the actual Insight Magazine site, but did just find it reproduced in its entirety at WorldNet Daily, which has a content-sharing agreement with Insight Magazine. Here it is at WND.
I agree.
amnesty is good....amnesty is conservative....amnesty never results in more illegals....amnesty is good....amnesty is conservative....amnesty never results in more illegals
repeat as necessary.
“Nation of Immigrants, Statue of Liberty, Jobs Americans Won’t Do...”
All of which of course means that illegal immigration is a great thing and borders and the rule of law are meaningless.
Go McCain.
