Phelps ties Spitz's with seventh gold By Steven Nelson Posted Friday, August 15, 2008 6:38 PM ET BEIJING -- Move over Mark Spitz.
Michael Phelps won his seventh gold medal of the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, edging Milorad Cavic by .01 of second in the 100m butterfly.
Spitz won his seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games. Phelps will try to beat the record in the 4x100m medley relay Sunday.
"I've always marveled at the fact that in the last four years (since Phelps won six golds in Athens), he has had to live with a lot more expectations and anxiety that I had to deal with," Spitz said.
"I was under the radar circle. Only in swimdom circles did people understand what I was trying to do. And only after four days of an eight-day competition did people from other venues start to understand what was happening at the swim venue in Germany."
While the pre-meet, potential upset talk in the 100m fly centered around world-record holder Ian Crocker, Cailfornia-trained Cavic, who competes for Serbia, surpassed Phelps in the heats as the second-fastest man to swim the event. He nearly spoiled Phelps' chase at history.
Almost.
I am glad I got to share that, thanks for replying. It is definitely nowhere near definitive but nobody can say that there was an error either. Not after that last effort!
Ok, this was fun but I have to go see if they have uncovered that beanpole Barry Hussein Soetoro-Obama’s Birth Certificate yet!!
Good night and enjoy MP’s race #8.
Yes..I saw it! Heart stopping race..I am hooked on the Olympics, Phelps, his mom..LOVE it!
Nope. Aquaman wears “Michael Phelps” pajamas to bed.
The last two nights he has finally shown some strain on his face, after a win.
His powers of recuperation are off the charts. He wins a gold medal, and an hour later he takes first in a qualifier.
I don't think it's drugs, he seems like a nice kid.....but if it is, throw him in jail.
Nothing has been pulled.
A standard HDTV camera isn't fast enough. It has a frame rate of just 30 fps. The race was timed to the 0.01 second.
You need to go back and check. The 2008 Olympic You Tube videos are being pulled for Copyright violations, per NBC.
I don’t know why you think ALL you tube video links expire in a few minutes. That’s not true at all.
None of the video links posted from YT on the Phelps win work anymore.
Is there any other region of Serbia that can be split off into its own independent country?
one video link still works, because You Tube hasn’t caught it yet, but the others are gone, per Copyright violation.
Good. Then you can tell us what year he graduated from Dental School, where he opened his dental practice, and all the other info you should know.
From 1964 to 1968 Mark attended the Santa Clara High School. After graduating he went on to Indiana University.
At Indiana University from 1968-72, he was a pre-dental student and member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. Time Magazine asked him if he wanted to return to dental school after the Olympics. “I always wanted to be a dentist from the time I was in high school, and I was accepted to dental school in the spring of 1972. I was planning to go, but after the Olympics there were other opportunities. I did some television and speaking engagements, and things just went from there.”[28]
According to the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Mark Spitz was planning on attending in the fall of 1972, but instead he moved to California. He was quoted in the Chicago Tribune in June, 2004 saying, Im probably the most famous dentist who never became a dentist in the world.
You might be one of the few taking up for Collinsworth’s question about “not being cool.” Everyone else thought it was a terrible question, and I agree. Why even bring up the idea of making patriotism possibly seem uncool? Totally uncalled for, in my opinion.
I stopped watching the interview when he asked that one.
That was my recollection of Spitz’ non-dental career. Thanks for posting accurate info.
You’d think that by the time a guy makes it to the Olympics that he would know enough to NOT glide in to the wall.
This is the second race I’ve seen that gliding in has cost someone a medal place.
My kids learned this in Y swimming when they were in grade school.
There are large touch pads lowered into the water on the wall.
You have to hit them with your hands to record your time electronically.

This is NBC site and NONE of the videos work here... technical problem it says.
You slow down when you glide. By taking the extra stroke, he kept his speed up and gained him that few hundredths that he needed. Plus, he would have punched the touch pad harder and since they’re touch sensitive, it may have been enough to record first.
