What is China doing??? Censoring Youtube now?
Anyway, like I said: Watch from 2:34-2:36 and around the 2:45 mark for the clearest evidence.
Amazing!

Maybe he was letting the cameraman keep it as a momento.

Mark Spitz! What a class act!!!!
Well, but for hearing this interview and Spitz's comments...
as middling sports fan...
I wouldn't know that Phelps came very close to 7 gold medals
in Athens in 2004.
Heck, Spitz is "waxing lyrical".
That's about the only way I can describe the comments by Spitz.
Not many folks can "pass the torch" as gracefully as that.
Even if Spitz rehearsed it and was taking the advice of "image
consultants" (common in California!)...
he deserves credit for doing the right thing.
I hope he has his speech written for tomorrow night when Phelps
gets that EIGHTH gold (G-d willing!).

Personally I think what he did is more impressive than what Spitz did. Competition is much fiercer now and comes from a lot more countries.

No, no. YouTube expires the links, intentionally, and fairly quickly. That magic number in the link, such as the
Y80RZScWU28 in your link, is only good for a few minutes. The same video, exactly, is still there. You just have to search for it by title or some other more persistent attribute.

Cavic had some nerve to cry after shooting off his mouth and pussyfooting that last 10 meters. This is the stuff of competitive lore, world record or not:
“He (Cavic) said it would be good for the sport of swimming and good for me if I lost. That’s what he was quoted as, so when Bob told me that, I was pretty fired up,” said Phelps.
Cavic had challenged Phelps even before the race began.
As the American took up his familiar pre-race stance alongside his block, facing the side of the pool, Cavic stood by his own block and faced him.
The two stood stock still and staring until the starter called them onto the blocks, but at the finish it was Cavic who blinked, missing out on gold in 50.59.
Hat tip to ThePythonicCow.

There is another video, with more detail and views, to be found on
YouTube.com, by searching for
Michael Phelps. 7th Golden Beijing 2008

Just watched that on NBC...amazing. I thought Cavic was going to win...but Phelps edged it out by 1/100th of a second. Wow!

“If the Phelps boy took one silver or bronze, excuse me for saying it, but the story, and thats all Im interested in here, would be more interesting and less predictable perhaps.”
Watching a long standing Olympic record fall is way more interesting than seeing Phelps come close and lose to some swimmer we'll never hear of again. Do you root against a triple crown winner too?
Sorry IDGI.
Also, it's not predictable that he would win. A few of the first individual races were easy for him, but the fact he's swimming in so many, fatigue does set in at the end of the week, and he's swimming against men who only swim one or two races in which they excel. It's always anybody’s game at the Olympics, because these are the best of the best competing.

Wow, thanks for the info TPC. You have been chock full of useful information in this thread.
LOL, I had to check your profile and must say, we have quite a bit in common. We even live in the same County!!!
Nice to meet ya :)

2:05 and 2:35 or so are indeed the best evidence. I think you see the lunge at 2:05.

Come on, dude. Phelps has waaaaaaaaaay past Spitz’s WR times.
So, while Phelps hasn’t set WR times in all his races, his times are way better than any time Spitz had.

Rodney2 is a troll. He has been trying to start arguments. I know Mark Spitz. We went to school together at IU.

“The Headline.........
Phelps ties Spitz’s with seventh gold
You’re kidding, right?”
In all fairness, you did have to read the article to know for sure that “Phelps” was Michael Phelps and “Spitz” was Mark Spitz and “gold” referred to an Olympic medal.

NBC is stalking You Tube...big time.
All Olympic videos are pulled immediately.
The NBC website should have the video, though.
