First the NYT decides the McCain campaign is screwed up and then it chastises it for this problem.

In actual fact, what little basis they have for their assertions is off-the-record discussions by anonymous figures.

No one stops to think, that Senator McCain and his campaign are tied in the polls with Barak Obama in spite of a 12 point generic Democrat over Republican finding.

Previously, the war was lost. Then the surge would not work and now McCain does not have a chance.

“No one stops to think, that Senator McCain and his campaign are tied in the polls with Barak Obama in spite of a 12 point generic Democrat over Republican finding.”

Must be pretty frustrating for at least two groups:

The democrats, who expected a cakewalk, and

The true conservatives who repeatedly swear they won’t vote for McCain, and those who claim it will be best for the conservative cause if Obama wins.

I for one can’t help but sort of admire the maverick in him, who seems to just soldier (sail?) on, in spite of the threats, the advice givers, detractors, etc.

And, about 500 million dollars in free advertising for Obama from the gushing in the old media. I've seen a lot of presidential campaigns now. The media has been clearly rooting for the dem in every one of them. But since 1980, it gets worse every election cycle. 2008 is far and away the worst. (I just wonder what NBCCBSABCCNNMSNBCNYTWAPO has planned for a week before the election this year. It's going to have to be a doozy to be worse than the DUI in 2000 and the RatherGate and Al Qaa Qaa blitzes the media ran in 2004 and the corrupt R's blitz in 2006. It's amazing that the only last minute scandals that erupt before an election are perpetrated by R's, isn't it? They wouldn't dream of holding the Larry Sinclair story until a week before the election and then giving it wall-to-wall coverage into election day. But that's basically what happens to R's every single presidential election.)

To his credit, McCain's quixotic ads have knocked the media off the Obamessiah hope and change crap and the TRIUMPHANT VISIT TO EUROPE crap a little by embarassing them and forcing Obama to talk about tire guages and oil drilling. To be sure, the media will regroup and there will be a new narrative that requires Obama to be elected. But they have been knocked off stride.

In 1992 by this point, the old media had already been running a focused, twelve month campaign to convince Americans that all of us and our children would be dying soon because of the health care system and that we needed a national health care system so our children could survive the decade and that GHWB was a dork.

The closest equivalent to that this year is the Global Warming Crisis. But they haven't managed a convincing case that Obama has any useful ideas in that regard. And, McCain has neutralized that issue (even before 4.00 gas) by being as wrong about the issue as Obama.

So they are left writing articles wondering why Obama isn't further ahead.
