Elizabeth Edwards Speaks Out on Husband's Affair
ABCNEWS ^ | August 08, 2008 | Jennifer Parker

Posted on 08/08/2008 6:31:27 PM PDT by ricks_place

ABC News' Jennifer Parker reports: Elizabeth Edwards, the wife of former Sen. John Edwards has reacted to the news of her husband's affair, posting a blog titled "Today" on the liberal Daily Kos website and asking for privacy for her family.

In the blog, Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it. "This was our private matter," she writes.

She heaps blame on the news media for prying into her family's life, writing, "the toll on our family of news helicopters over our house and reporters in our driveway is yet unknown."

She disputes the National Enquirer allegations that her husband fathered a child outside of their marriage.

The Elizabeth Edwards blog on Daily Kos reads: "Our family has been through a lot. Some caused by nature, some caused by human weakness, and some – most recently – caused by the desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for the human consequences. None of these has been easy. But we have stood with one another through them all. Although John believes he should stand alone and take the consequences of his action now, when the door closes behind him, he has his family waiting for him.

"John made a terrible mistake in 2006. The fact that it is a mistake that many others have made before him did not make it any easier for me to hear when he told me what he had done. But he did tell me. And we began a long and painful process in 2006, a process oddly made somewhat easier with my diagnosis in March of 2007.

Liz claims this was caused by a desire for sensationalism and profit without any regard for human consequences. She sounds like she's describing the courtroom tactics and campaign strategy of her sleazy husband.

“”This was our private matter,” she writes.”

Yeah, well Mrs. Edwards, first I am truly sorry for you, but not wholly sympathetic. Do you mean to tell us that you allowed your husband to lie and deny to the American public for all this time about something you knew to be true?
Sick or not, you are an accomplice to his dishonesty and cover-up. keep in mind, he caused the this problem and hard-ache, no one else. I suspect, that if you are lucky, he will stay close to the ranch in the future. No one any longer has use for the phony, even the most strident fools on the left.

I believe B of A acquired Countrywide, but I assume Countrywide is a subsidiary of B of A and still in existence. The deal might not be completed yet (I haven’t followed that deal.)

"This was our private matter," she writes.

Yes ma'am, it was your private business until your husband, as a public figure, lied about it to the press. Once again, he failed you.

I speak from some experience. Breast cancer killed my wife after 7 years of struggle. I didn't cheat on her because I once took an oath to be faithful in "Good times and in bad, in sickness and in health". I'm not a hero and I don't deserve a bit of praise. I was faithful to her because that's what adults do when they take an oath;they keep their word.

Mrs. Edwards deserves better, as does every woman. John Edwards is a punk.

Ooohh, looks like the Post had the scent in Aug. 2007...... wonder if they did anything more with it. Notice how they refer to ‘candidate’ which would seem to rule out current office-holders, since if it were a Senator or Governor or Congressman, etc. they would have said “prominent politician” or “prominent X”....... Edwards was one of the only prominent pols out of office in 2007 who might have been referred to simply as “candidate”

I do keep wondering whether Rielle is good with all of today’s themes of saying (1) affair ended in 2006, (2) was all about sex, he never loved her, (3) child is not his, etc. etc. If he had been promising to marry her, or even hinting at it, or if he had such hopes/fantasies even if he didn’t express anything, then today’s statements from both John and Elizabeth Edwards would seem to be bitter blows to Rielle. Do they have her support for this latest ‘spin’ or is she now sitting enraged somewhere, wondering what her next move should be? She certainly is the spurned and scorned woman now........

Thanks for your lucid post.

I concur with your conclusion that Elizabeth Edwards knowingly allowed the affair to continue in the face of her terminal illness.

It is something that few would have thought of. Often such insight requires a genuine knowledge of human nature and suffering, incraeasingly all to rare these days.

I am amazed at the Roger Altman connection, former Deputy Treasurer with BJ's administration, who now owns National Enquirer Magazine. It puts a possible trail right to Hillary , taking Edwards out of the VP line up, for sending his delegates over to Obama. Hillery needed them desperately.

Yet is their no mercy on the hearts of the Clintons? Again they talk the compassionate talk, but cannot walk it.Shudder to think of the destruction Hillary will wreck on this country should she become president or vice president. She likely did quite a job on the Edwards family and on Hunter, who may eventually commit suicide. Apparently Hunter thinks she will marry Edwards one day, according to the Enquirer article. Here quietude has been bought.Desperate women believe desperate things. Who knows what she will do when she finds that Edwards will marry another from his own class of a$$hats? And the money stops flowing after the election in November?

This tragedy will continue to unfold for many more years.

Ooh, thanks for shaking the dust off that one. Now, will the MSM do the investigative work that one would expect if there was a “R” after Johnny’s name?

The lady is all over television, she writes opinion pieces, her husband runs for President, runs for Vice President, and she is mad about reporters getting into their "family life"?

Oh, and don't forget how she tried to get the media to turn on her neighbor for trying to protect his property.

Not to be picky, but Ann Coulter DID NOT call Edwards a faggot at CPAC in 2007.

Good seat at convention!

Understood, the comment was not a serious slur but sarcastic. It was most interesting that John Edwards used Elizabeth to attack Ann Coulter at that time too. He could have recognized the sarcasm and handled it that way. John Edwards does comes off a bit light in the lofas.

Sorry lady, but it's not the media's fault your husband can't keep his pants on. As much as I feel your pain (literally, since I'm in your shoes in more ways than one), no pass for you.

When you and your family step into the public arena in search of the most powerful job on earth, you have to accept a large measure of higher scrutiny. It just comes with the job, and you have to accept the bad with the good.

Also, please stop letting your little metro-man hide behind your apron strings every time he gets in trouble. If he can't fight his own battles over something as stupid as getting some “strange”, what would possibly lead anyone on earth to believe he's even remotely ready for the White House. Frankly, he's a joke. He's now become nothing more than a sad parody of himself (well, kid of sad, I personally think it's hilarious). That's self-inflicted. Tough. Suck it up or go home.

Here's a solution. You want privacy, keep your husband in the house and stay out of the spotlight. Shut up and go away and the spotlight will fade.

posted it from KOS because Elizabeth Edwards herself posted her message the America at KOS. I just now realized they pulled my post. I don’t know if that is a no-no regarding another blog site.

KOS is likely banned at FR. KOS is 'wacky'!

I agree. The only reason I feel a bit differently about Elizabeth is that if she dies (God willing she will not and will have many years in front of her), this jerk of a husband and Father is all these kids have (horrible human that he is!). I guess given that situation, I am willing to cut her some slack, but only her and only for that reason.

What kind of man makes his dying wife defend him for adultery? That said, the world was a better place when we did know about this stuff.

The liberal wives have a very different mindset. My wife made it plain to me what would happen if I did something like this. It was not a pleasant scenario.

Elizabeth Edwards says her husband told her about the affair in 2006 and they worked through it.

Yes madam, so explain why he was still in her bedroom at 2:30 in the morning just two weeks ago and again a month before that?

Either you are stupid, madam, or you are lying to cover for him.
