For Romney, now's the time to sweat
The Boston Globe ^ | July 22nd | Globe Staff

WASHINGTON - Mitt Romney is a shrewd businessman, known for his cautious approach to the nerve-rattling takeover business. Romney's colleagues even came up for a name for what happened when Romney's inner worries began to ruffle his carefully groomed appearance - "pitting," for when the armpits of his expensive blue shirts would start to darken from perspiration.

And who are they ? I risked my account defending McClintock to the hilt, because I knew how liberal a phony Ah-nold would be, and he has proven that 100%. For you to believe Slick Willard is a Conservative when he is literally no different than Ah-nold shows you again, either to be a rank hypocrite, or blind as a bat.

>> And yes, I know some good and longtime conservatives who supported Rudy, however, mistaken they may have been. : ) Furthermore, I didn't accuse them of being any less conservative for their choice. <<

Well rest assured I do not think that Robert Bork or Jim DeMint is a "fake consevative" for endorsing Romney, just as I do not think Duncan Hunter is a "fake conservative" for endorsing Huckabee or Tommy Thompson is a "fake conservative" for endorsing Rudy Giuliai.

But do I think Mitt Romney is a fake conservative? Yes I do. Mitt's parents were the quinticential "moderate" Republicans of the 60s and 70s that were, in the words of Congressional Quarterly "perhaps a bit to the right of Nelson Rockefeller, but well to the left of Ronald Reagan". Mitt Romney grew up in a family of country club Republicans and has never been a conservative, he just played one on TV during the 2008 primary.

Now I agree that good conservatives can end up backing Romney, just that your support of Romney is misplaced, IMO. Romney has never proven a reliable conservative. McCain is bad enough as it is. The last thing we need is BOTH candidates on the ticket to be "questionable" in their committement to conservative values.

I am not going to argue motivation with Mitt Romney. From this distance, I simply cannot tell for certain, how sincere his conversion is. I do believe as president, he would have governed as a conservative, for a variety of reasons.

For starters, unlike Arnold, who ran on a rather Liberal platform, Mitt Romney ran on a conservative platform. He garnered the support of many conservatives, and would had to have kept the promise to govern as a conservative or risk losing the support of those same conservatives and hence a second term. He had many conservatives in his campaign, and would have hired many of them in his administration as presidents do. Thus, many conservatives would have been advising him. He courted us and we would have held some prominence in his administration and thus also could have held his feet to the fire and so on. Those are some but by no means all of the reasons Mitt would have governed as a conservative.

Re your “fixing” my post about Romney being recognizable to the voters — keep your hands off others’ messages.

You can call Romney a liberal all you like — it doesn’t hurt my feelings — what matters is that he is a Republican and from what acquaintances tell me, it sounds like they think he has what it takes to help the McCain ticket, whether you agree or not.

Call me a RINO, liberal, whatever — but I’ve voted GOP every election since I was able to vote some 40 years ago so put THAT in your “big ‘ol” pipe and smoke it!

Not “conservative” enough for you? Pity...

First of all, it's hard for me to imagine a conservative calling those conservative leaders I mentioned as members of the VRWC (Vast Right Wing Conspiracy). I would expect that from liberals, or a poster on DU, but not from a conservative.

As to your assertion that you had asked me questions first, I would refer you to post # 149 where I asked you questions where not all were answered. I subsequently followed up in post # 184, once again to no avail. I went to a public school, so my math may be a little off, but I think posts 149 & 184 come before 196.

Then you dive right into the epitome of maturity, & call me bucko. It's not the worse I've been called, & I take no offense, but it is something I would expect from a less civil crowd on the left. It's obvious at this point that I've really ticked you off w/ my questions, which was not my intent. Perhaps your anger stems from the inability to answer them. But in any case, we seem to be at a point where no reasoned discussion can be had between the 2 of us.

I hold no ill will towards you, & wish you the very best in your pursuits.

"I am not going to argue motivation with Mitt Romney. From this distance, I simply cannot tell for certain, how sincere his conversion is."

Which is a key argument. You don't truly know. You're taking this on blind faith. That's what you do in religion, you don't do that with somebody running for high office. They've got to have the record that matches the rhetoric.

"I do believe as president, he would have governed as a conservative, for a variety of reasons."

How ? There is nothing in his public life up to this point that indicates he will. He had ample opportunity to do so and he never did. Why is it that Don Carcieri in Rhode Island, a state with near-similar dynamics, can Govern as a Conservative ? Because he BELIEVES in what he says and he sets out to do it. *omney has never demonstrated he has a core set of principles beyond, "Just win, Baby."

"For starters, unlike Arnold, who ran on a rather Liberal platform, Mitt Romney ran on a conservative platform."

Not quite. Indeed, Ah-nold, like you-know-who, ran on a very similar platform for Governor. Both claimed to be the heroes riding in on White horses to save the messes in their respective states. In the case of the latter, he kept hammering away, "I saved the Olympics ! I can save Massachusetts (and more to the point, pump up the MA GOP)." I figured, OK, well, let's see him do it (and I did support him in '02, if only because he MARKETED himself exactly as you see him now). Problem is, from nearly the start, warning bells started going off. MA had another Republican named Jim Rappaport, who was a potential future Governor or Senator, and Rappaport offered himself to be the Lieutenant and have a really strong ticket. *omney, rather than take him up on the offer, went out of his way to DESTROY Rappaport and install a total cypher as his Lieutenant, a woman who was never able to win office in her own local constituency (and thereby was never going to be a serious candidate for office in the future -- indeed, despite the lampooning of Jane Swift, the outgoing Governor, ole Jane was no slouch, she won practically every office she had run for on her own accord, and she nearly knocked off a rodent incumbent, in a bad GOP year (1996), for Congress).

Now, once in, he showed about 5 minutes worth of attention to the job and to party responsibilities. Fact is, like some of his predecessors, he realized it was going to take REAL work, and he just got bored. He wasn't governing like a Conservative, he wasn't governing at all. There were colossal problems in the state, from the judiciary, to the Big Dig, healthcare, et al, rodent party corruption, and he just wasn't much interested. No, just a convenient little resume booster. When the party suffered more losses in '04, the last remaining reason for his being Governor went straight out the window. He didn't bother to lift a finger for the party afterwards. There were candidates begging for his help, and he just waved them off. He did exactly like ex-Gov. Weld did, who shafted every single wing of the MA GOP.

Fact is, I got tired of making excuses for the guy. He wanted the Presidency, he couldn't be bothered with dealing with the office he had. I think the perfect example was the judicial issue. He had an appointment to screen a candidate that had enough warning bells to signal that they would release criminals onto the streets without much hesistation. He spent a few minutes with the applicant before rushing off to a more important function... his lunch at Ruth's Chris. That young couple late last year, younger then myself, were brutally murdered by the criminal released by this judge -- who fled clear across the country to Washington state. When the story exploded, right when you-know-who was in the midst of his serious campaign, he was more indignant that it would put a crimp in his campaign than the reality that an innocent young couple was dead. His f'ing long lunch was more important to him than stopping a pro-criminal liberal from getting appointed to the bench.

With his wealth, he's used it quite liberally to buy the kind of support most political candidates have to EARN, namely because he couldn't earn it. Most of his high-profile supporters are on his payroll. Many more have written puff pieces that either gloss over or ignore the man's record, motivations, and inclinations towards not being honest (he got caught lying about his own father and MLK, just audacious stuff). Character matters, and record matters. He looks good on tv ? So did Bubba. Articulate ? So was Bubba. Like Bubba, he'd tell you whatever you'd want to hear to make you believe he shares your values.

A long time ago, in 1888, the GOP put up a "family values" candidate for the Presidency. A former House Speaker and Senator named James Blaine from Maine. Everybody conceded, this guy has an excellent family life... but there was a big problem. Whereas he looked good with his family, most folks in Washington and elsewhere knew his PUBLIC record was anything but Conservative and ethical. His Democrat opponent was a New Yorker named Grover Cleveland. Now allegations had been made that Cleveland was a cad in private (indeed, he took responsibility for a young child, whom in fact may have been fathered by a colleague of his, but the media had a field day with it), but Cleveland's PUBLIC reputation was spotless. Come election day, despite the misgivings about the child, Cleveland became the first Democrat elected President since James Buchanan 32 years earlier. Blaine never did win elective office again (and at last I heard, one of his descendents was a Pennsylvania candidate not so long ago -- appropriately, a liberal Democrat).

When a lot of us get upset over seeing all this ra-ra stuff for *omney, most of us are tired of seeing a lot of good people fooled by him. We didn't just decide we didn't like him overnight, etc., but came to the conclusion over many years of observation that the guy was simply bad news, and precisely the kind of person we don't want running our party or our country (and before you say, "He's just running for VP", remember, because of McCain's age and health problems, he has better than a 50-50 chance of becoming President, and that's another key point). For some people in this election cycle, they're looking for a savior, for the rodents, they're looking to Obama, for some in the GOP, they're looking at *omney. But we're not electing a savior, we're electing a President. Both of these guys are the proverbial mirage in the desert... for each party, you WANT to believe they're the one, but if you look closely, you'll see neither of them are anything but an illusion. That's all they ever will be, and once you dive into that mirage, you end up with the reality, not a cool sip of water, but a mouthful of sand.

Let's rewind. A thread is started about Romney getting the VP nod. I read 3 threads previously that had flushed right into LDS debate. I see YOUR post on one of those threads.

Horror of horrors! You mean I actually posted on a thread?

Call the cops - right now.

I come here and in reply to a thread that contained NO reference to LDS you post "give it a rest". I suggested the same. Perhaps we can actually read something about Mitt Romney that does not include the LDS was my point.

Distraction and diversion on your part. No one (and I mean no one) brought up Mormonism on this thread until you did. "Your point" does not negate that fact.

Further, I have posted many replies here on FR that past several months that state my opposition to Romney based on his liberal politics and past. Specifically: guns, homosexual "rights", and the appointment of very liberal judges.

Instead, I was called names by the resident Christians.

Who called you what name?

Still - get used to it around here. Resident LDS Defender of the Faith called me this in post #405:

Come out of the bigot closet!

Big deal. Sticks and stones.

By the way restornu - here is a article for you:

Mitt Romney and his good looking family is what America is all about.

His personna, his passion, his expertise are EXACTLY what is needed on the GOP ticket in 2008.

I could care less about a few 3-second long snippets from YouTube ... all of which occurred nearly 20 years ago when Romney was a target of some ‘gotcha’ reporters.

These rabid anti-Romney-obsessed on FR really are pathetic. It’s like they wake up every day looking to diss Romney. Their only joy is making up juvenile names ....

My theory is that they are really jealous of Romney’s wealth, success, good looks, and successful family life.

GO ROMNEY!

The American voters will not be converted by Romney
but will examine what he has done. Socialism.
Dictatorship. Bad judges yielding victims.
Coverup of fraud. Federal bailout of his schemes.

Sen.McCain and Loser Romney ===> Obama ‘08 (bad choice)

Why don't you guys give it a rest?

Nope:

Here is why...

2 Corinthians 11:12-15
 12.  And I will keep on doing what I am doing in order to cut the ground from under those who want an opportunity to be considered equal with us in the things they boast about.
 13.  For such men are false apostles, deceitful workmen, masquerading as apostles of Christ.
 14.  And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.
 15.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve. (niv)

Unlike Dictator Socialist Romney, Gov. Palin has a good looking familiy AND exudes good judgment.

Alaska House OKs Gas Pipeline Plan for North Slope - July 23, 2008
JUNEAU, Alaska -- Alaska's House of Representatives has approved a company's plan
to pursue a natural gas pipeline that could unlock 4.5 billion cubic feet of gas reserves a day.
Lawmakers in Alaska's House voted to support Gov. Sarah Palin's proposal to award TransCanada Corp.
an exclusive license to pursue federal certification for the 1,715-mile North Slope pipeline.

Is not THAT special. The rest talk (or less)
and Gov. Palin actually did something
(other than seeking federal bailouts for everything like Romney).

I think these people could possibly be infiltrators.

I suggest you take the time to look at the sign-up date of many that you are accusing..they have been here much longer than you have.

Their style of confrontation is typical of people who are emotional rather than intellectual in their arguments.

That is a RIOT, coming from a "mitten"...your friends post reams about how beautiful mitt is and you call others "emotional"....ROTFL!

I have spent my life time working for conservative candidates and causes and these folks are unlike any I have ever encountered in the conservative movement.

What candidates? Where? When? I call BS on that! Your posts indicate that you are just another Romney operative. Where were you in 2000?
