US 'won't allow' Iran to shut key Gulf oil route

The commander of the US navy's Fifth Fleet warned on Monday that the United States will not allow Iran to shut the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf sea lane through which much of the world's oil is supplied.

His remarks followed comments by the chief of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, who issued a new warning last week against any attack against his country over its controversial nuclear drive.

"It is natural that when a country is attacked it uses all of its capabilities against the enemy, and definitely our control of the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz would be one of our actions," Jafari said.

Iran’s neighbours may also have something to say about Iran trying to close the Straits of Hormuz. There is a reason why Gulf States have been on a military buying spree for the last couple of years.

When will the msm start calling these "elite" forces what they are: cannon fodder. Ask my shipmates what happened last time they gave us trouble in the Gulf.

"So, how did that work out for ya last time?"

The truth that Iran doesn’t want to admit is that their only ability to annoy ships in the Gulf is through terroristic action - any organized military operations will find themselves in a shallow grave, on ground, or in the water. Portable missile launchers is about the only thing that will have any effect, and most of those missiles are threats only to oil carriers. A US Navy escort should be able to block any possible hits on the carriers.

This idea worked so well for Iran last time. If they want round two against our Spec Ops and the Navy, I say let them try.

these clowns will make the exercise in blockade an worthwile endevour for Iranians

as much as this war, the effect of enemy military capability has been embolden and aided by the media reports

So we just smoked them out on the first shot? Oh dear, and they want to block the Strait Of Hormuz too? They are quite delusional in their fantasies./Just Asking - seoul62.......

Missiles launched at our fleet en masse from shore could be a concern as well. ....especially their new Russian-made SSN-X-26 Yakhont cruise missiles.

Carpet bombing the shoreline to remove their launchers has to be one of the first plays in securing the straits. Sinking their PT navy is probably the job of helicopters. I have every faith in the US Navy to go hot against any and all threats if it comes to a shooting war.

The USS Stark was hit with an Exocet, no?

The Silkworm is essentially an SS-N-2 and is not as much of a concern as the other missiles possibly in Iran’s inventories. The Silkworm is just as likely to hit a fishing boat...or the sea.

Spot on. These days, the media serve as willing puppets and sycophants of the enemies of the civilised world.

Missles yes but what about a few batteries of 155mm's? From shore, they can cover both shipping lanes in the Strait.
