House Democrats Call for Nationalization of Refineries

Urgent: House Democrats call for nationalization of refineries

Per Pergram-Capitol Hill

House Democrats responded to President's Bush's call for Congress to lift the moratorium on offshore drilling. This was at an on-camera press conference fed back live.

Among other things, the Democrats called for the government to own refineries so it could better control the flow of the oil supply.

They also reasserted that the reason the Appropriations Committee markup (where the vote on the amendment to lift the ban) was cancelled so they could focus on preparing the supplemental Iraq spending bill for tomorrow.

At an off-camera briefing, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) said the same. And a senior Republican House Appropriations Committee aide adds that "there were multiple reasons for the postponement" including discussion on the supplemental. But the aide said there was the thought that Democrats may wish to avoid a debate today on energy amendments.

Here are the highlights from briefing

Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), member of the House Appropriations Committee and one of the most-ardent opponents of off-shore drilling

1115

We (the government) should own the refineries. Then we can control how much gets out into the market.

Hinchey on why they postponed the Appropriations markup

1119

I think there aren't enough votes for the Peterson amendment. It wasn't taken up (the Interior spending bill) because of the omnibus Appropriations bill. That's the main focus of the Appropriations Committee.

Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL)

1116

They (Republicans) have a one-trick pony approach.

Rep. Nick Rahall (D-WV), Chairman of the Resources Committee

1106

You cannot drill your way out of this.

Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA), chairman of the House Select Committee on Global Warming

1111

The White House has become a ventriloquist for the oil and gas energy.

Yep, exactly. People have been saying it for YEARS, only know they are removing any and all doubt. It’s just a shame this won’t be pointed out by our (supposedly “free”) media, who are really just liberal supporters and “closet” marxists themselves.

Oh wow things are just going totally to pieces aren’t they?

I mean, we are seeing the dominoes tumble down as we speak. We haven’t seen nothing yet though. If OBama gets in prepare to be horrified speechless.

Wow oh wow. This is not the country I remember from even 10 years ago.

Anyone with a brain knows the answer is to drill for more oil rather than let govt dolts control what bits we have now.

The problem is that the average American DOESN’T have a brain when it comes to issues like this. We would like to think that the average American understand the things us FReepers kind of take for granted. But the truth is they are brainwashed by propaganda, and probably don’t even recognize these proposals as outright socialism. And, if they do - half of them would applaud it! The real threat in all of this is the average American is wholly unaware of what is really going on in Washington. The only thing they hear are soundbites on the evening news, or biased articles in their papers.

My husband was having a discussion last night with some of the guys he works with - they were talking about Obama, and didn’t even have a clue as to some of the things he really stood for. Granted, they weren’t going to vote for him anyway, but they were in complete disbelief when my husband brought up the lapel pin thing, and the no hand over the heart for the anthem thing. They had never even HEARD about it! And, honestly, the only reason my husband knew about it is because I am very interested in politics personally, and of course, because I post here...

We have a herculean task ahead of us as a nation if we are to save this country from socialism in all of its various forms. The first task is to educate people as to WHY socialism is bad. It’s not enough to point to the countries where it has failed because the socialists come back with “well we’ll do it BETTER”.

UGH... obviously I could go on and on. Sometimes I do worry that we WON’T be able to stop this until our citizenry goes through the same things those in China face now, and what Russia’s people faced in the past under Stalin, etc...

I wouldn't have a problem if the U.S. Gov’t wanted to run a gas and oil business of it's own to compete with other companies. Undoubtedly, they would lose billions of dollars before they had the sense to go out of business.

Yeah I don’t watch TV but I do read the news outlets online and the only reason I know about Obama’s tricksies for nasty hobbitsies is via Free Republic and the drudgereport.

There is never a major headline that says “Obama says we cannot drive SUVs or eat as much as we want to”. I like to think a few years back that stuff would have made headlines.

Socialism = the government owning the means of production.

This is pure socialism.

And anyone who’s ever wondered why social security is so screwed up, should wonder if they want the same management group in charge of a basic commodity.

They can’t run their own lives. Why does anyone think they should run ours?

The first socialist coming your way:

The Government Refining Consortium today limited each American family to 200 miles per week of gasoline.....

Do you realize how bad PEMEX is....?

Do you realize that on the whole, it is still easier for foreign oil companies to do work inside Castro's Cuba, than it is for them to do work inside Mexico because of the PEMEX "doctrine"....?

And this is nearly fifteen years into the post-NAFTA era...

...Then we can control how much gets out into the market."

This line is being highlighted quite a bit, but note it says to control the inventory, not prices. You are correct that the refineries are running near capacity already. They are talking about controlling the flow of inventory, when there is no need to control it.

They mean to ration it. They have voted 3 times in the past month to not allow drilling, so the only thing they can do is ration it. And their constituencies are cheering them on claiming this isn't socialism/nazism/fascism. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x3358330 see post 25.

We need President Bush/Cheney to respond to this in a clear enumerated response demonstrating the nonsense and danger of the Socialists proposal. The White House could start with the 4 bills voted down along party lines, highlight Venezuela's true cost for their gasoline subsidies, and then President Bush should overturn his Father's executive order.

Maurice Hinchey is an idiot. For you new Freepers, he is the “representative” of Ithaca, the Triple Cities (Binghamton) all the way to the Hudson. He was caught at National Airport with a gun once, and, the most infamous thing I have ever heard out of his mouth was in November 1998 at Christ Church in Binghamton, he actually said this...
“Conservatives remind me of the German Youth of the 30’s.”
If it was a Republican who said that, he would be working on a truck farm now, but Maurice still serves. The idea of nationalizing the oil companies comes as no surprise to me. I just can't wait to listen to the podcast of the Great One's show last night.

I would. Such a company would be automatically subsidized with taxpayer money--giving them a "competitive advantage" that no private company could ever have. "Are people not willing to pay for our products? Don't worry, they'll pay on April 15!"

I’d sooner see us nationalize Saudi Arabia or Iran. Because the sooner they run out of oil, the sooner they’ll shut up and go back to what they were doing in the early 20th c.

I've got to wonder what Wall Street knows that we don't.

FOX is reporting that speculators could be making $50 to $60 per barrel profit.

I'm all for *legitimate* free market principles but, if that's true, they need to be hung.

I wonder how nationalizing the oil companies would be done? Would they buy the oil companies at current value, or would they set a price of their own choosing?

Would all th oil company employees than become federal employees? Would the nationalization extend to the gas stations employees , suppliers, and others?

Maybe we'll all become federal employees, with the benefits package, and a great retirement program?

The U.S. “Free Press” has become a Propaganda Machine for the Democrat Party. It will do its best to keep this from public awareness.
