Only because conspiracy theories are classified as nonfiction. Most like that one, stretches legends so far they should be labeled fiction.
I’ve read the book. In fact I read it back in the 80s, long before Dan Brown.
As a historian, I thought the facts the authors brought forward to support their theory were interesting and somewhat possible-plausible, if not entirely persuasive.
Most people who criticize it, haven’t read it.
