McCain appeals to independents with environment pitch

(CNN) -- Kicking off a week-long push seen as outreach to independent and Democratic voters in crucial swing states, John McCain on Monday will deliver a speech outlining his vision for combating global warming.

"We stand warned by serious and credible scientists across the world that time is short and the dangers are great," McCain will say in Portland, Oregon, according to prepared remarks. "The most relevant question now is whether our own government is equal to the challenge."

McCain's commitment to fight global warming puts him at odds with some Republicans in Congress and with the Bush administration, which has not made climate change a top priority.

McCain's stance on carbon emissions places him closer on the environmental spectrum to Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

In his speech, the Arizona senator will propose capping carbon emissions incrementally, with the goal of returning to 1990 emission levels by the year 2020 using a cap-and-trade program.

>> Even if Obama wins Illinois, New York, and California by 75%, McCain could still win electorally.

If we get the same government with McCain as we would with Obama, then what does it matter?

>>"...I love the fact that he has embraced Global Warming and thus has removed it as an issue for the democrats."

Yeah man, you get it don't you. I say we also embrace abortion, affirmative action, high taxes for 'the rich', do everything short of nationalizing 'big oil', cut the military, grow the government, stop spying on terrorists, etc, and remove "it as an issue for the democrats"

"Just win, baby" seems to be the mantra. To hell with the damage to the country. So sad.

Exactly.

If I were a political animal, I would find ways of showing the average person how much freedom and money are taken from them because of a global scam and use that to pound the rats politically instead of joining them in the madness.

The university I went to for my first degree offered a BS in Meteorology (my first degree) from the College of Natural Sciences. A person earning that one had to take Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, and other hard science courses.

They have now eliminated Meteorology and offer a Arts degree in Climatology from the College of Social Science! There are no higher math or science courses required and the semiannual publication they send me is full of unscientific garbage about gender and cultural problems interacting with the environment. What junk!

This is not moderate. this is not reaching for the independents in the middle. This is far left liberalism. this is fruit-loop land!

I am going to have to start the "Hate to say I told you so ..." stuff awfully early this year.

McCain is a traitorous bastard, and a liberal pinhead.

McCain 2008 -Bite the pillow.

Thanks for sharing that.

I had wrongly assumed that "Climatology" had a similar curriculum to "Meteorology." I don't think I was alone.

It's almost worth a vanity post title "What is a Climatologist?"

There was a time on FR when there weren't McCain apologists present and folks were actually fighting his global warming legislation. This is an email from ACU in 2004 pointing out just some of the danger in this scam:
STOP SOROS, GORE AND MCCAIN

Someone needs to inform Capt. McQueeg that he's already given the conservative base more than enough reasons not to vote for him. We really don't need any more.

And yet, he just keeps on giving...

“Not one inch should ever be given to a liberal. Not one damned inch! Those willing to cede any issue to liberals should get the hell out of the way and let fighters take over the game, unlike the limp-wristed, purse-swinging, bed-wetters who have run the RNC since the death of Lee Atwater.”

Brilliant, just Brilliant!

Lets cling to our ideals and rally behind Duncan Hunter/Ron Paul/Bob Barr as a third party candidate. Our ideals and our morals will be intact after Obama has been inaugaurated.

And we can claim a moral victory, while Obama loads the SC with young uber-liberals with a strong family history of longevity. The left will own the SC for the next 30+ years.

But at least you didn’t give an inch. Compromise? Hell NO!

You want all or nothing and your fools game will get us NOTHING!

Stubborn conservatives like you will eventually fall into one of two camps: Those who voted for McCain and those who wish that they had voted for McCain.

That’s why I always put the scientist in Climate “Scientist” in quotes. Their methodology does not even began to pass the scientific rigors test.

"You want all or nothing and your fools game will get us NOTHING!"

I never said I wanted all or nothing, and am content with knowing that not one person on this planet agrees 100% with me on any one issue. On the other hand, what we have in you is someone who believes all of the tripe coming out of Washington and the national press. Nothing politically has changed, only the will of those who fight for what is right, and convinces those on the fence as to the right course of action. The examples are numerous, and the political pay back is enourmous.

"Stubborn conservatives like you..."

Thanks, it is a huge compliment. It means that I am confident on my beliefs and do not waiver from them. The converse is cowardous.

McCain supporters on Freerepublic are not going to have a good time I predict. A McCain presidency will only be slightly better than Hillary or Obama.

Kinda like, "do you want your whole arm chopped off, or just to the elbo?

I'm not voting for ANY old Repellican candidate infected with GANG-GREEN!!!

I'm voting for a REAL member of GANG-GREEN... Ralph Nader!!!

I can't stand the SOB, but at least he isn't diluting and distorting all commonsense conservatism with Christy Todd Whitman's and Arnold Schwartzenegger's brand of public policy and the Dems really hate him for stopping Algore in FL in 2000!!!

Politics makes strange bedfellows, but I refuse to git in bed with John McMistake, or either of the other two Demonicrats also trying to screw-up my beloved country!!!

You sound as if we conservatives are in the majority. Newsflash: We’re not.

If we stand united what will we have? A moral victory, and nothing more.

We can’t afford a morale victory. We can’t afford 30+ years of liberals controlling the SC.

Another shade of "RED," in the traditional use of the word.

A McCain presidency will only be slightly better than Hillary or Obama.

I contend it will be worse. Instead of the Dems introducing socialism, we will have McCain leading the pack with Dems in tow--introducing the same destructive policies and programs. We will have McCain rewriting the Republican platform to embrace his vision of the Party--amnesty, global warming, massive land acquisitions supposedly for "conservation," Law of the Sea Treaty, etc. We will have McCain in the position of undermining the election of good solid conservatives that don't buy into his leftist programs and trying to silence anyone in his party that disagrees with him. The MSM will eat it up and laud his great vision, all the while calling it "bipartisanship." With every headline of this "progress," you will feel that sharp jab in your back go ever-deeper.

I completely agree - I’m convinced that a McCain presidency would be far worse than an Obama or Clinton presidency for exactly the reasons you mentioned.
