Howard Dean appeared on the Daily Show and said definitively that the Michigan and Florida delegations will be seated. (H/t Scott Jacobs.) The video is here.
Representative quotes:
STEWART: If I were designing a plan to submarine your chances, and again, you dont have to follow my advice here, I would take the state that was, lets say crucial to the Republican election chances lets, lets call it Florida and I would find a way to insult them. Maybe not seat them at the convention, that sort of thing. Then I would pick a Rust Belt state, maybe a Michigan, and say to them the same. Now youve got two states that are angry with you. Do you think that would be a good way?
DEAN: Well, were actually going to seat them at the convention.
STEWART: What?! This is news! Are you really going to do that?
DEAN: Were going to find a way to seat them at the convention.
START: Are you really going to?
DEAN: Yeah.
STEWART: How how can you do that when their results dont count?
DEAN: Well, its a little hard, but were gonna do it.
. . . .
Its gonna be quite a juggling act, but were gonna do it. You cannot have a Democratic convention without Florida and Michigan.
Stewart also asked Dean why Michigan and Florida dont have to follow the rules. Dean replied: They do. Thats why they lost their delegates.
I dont get it either.
Finally, Dean argued that the Democrats system is still more democratic than the [system used by the] Republicans you know, the system where the voters choose all the delegates. Stewart let him get away with that one.
Watch it all, if you can stand it.
The latest from the house of waffles.
I think Florida will cream Michigan. I don’t see why Big Ten teams should be allowed in the BCS title game.
McPain vs Billary. The country is screwed.
I will enjoy Obama’s response to this news.
Me, I can't wait to watch all the heads start exploding over at DU, HuffPo and the Kos. ;)
Of course he did.
Jon Stewart is to the Democratic party as Carlita Kilpatrick is to Kwame, as Hillary is to Bill, and as Silda Spitzer is to Elliott.
The solution is simple. With the USFL solution, the Florida and Michigan delegations are seated, but collectively they ony count for three delegates each. Florida would be divvied up with each person counting as about 1/52 of a delegate. They have half delegates already, so why not? So Clinton would get about 2 delegates, and Uncommitted would get 1. Florida people would count as about 1/70th of a delegate, and Clinton would get two delegates and Obama one. This way, every vote counts, everyone gets to go and have a good time, and Florida and Michigan, who tried to increase their influence on the primaries by breaking party rules, get punished.
They would be justified in exploding. Obama was not on the ballot in MI by agreement with the other contenders. Sounds hosed to me.
“I will enjoy Obamas response to this news.”
If Florida and Michigan are seated at6 the convention, and their votes are counted, there will be riots in the streets because The Magic Mulatto will not get the nomination.
Ping.
Right you are, ought-six!
Nut just because they are SEATED doesn’t mean they’ll be COUNTED! I don’t trust Dean any farther than I could throw him. If FL and MI are counted, Adios, Obama!
Hold that thought. I need to go pop the corn.
Whoa. This should be in breaking news!
Operation Chaos!
And so it begins.
The Clintons are pulling in their markers,
That said -= I heard Stewart actually say something that I have been screaming for weeks - that we should have in an ad running day and night: In regards to the way the demRAts are running their primary campaign = "How do you expect to run the country!"
“If Florida and Michigan are seated at6 the convention, and their votes are counted, there will be riots in the streets because The Magic Mulatto will not get the nomination.”
You really think McGovern light is going to get the nomination? Hillary has this locked up. They are both going through the motions for when Hillary wins, Obama can say it is time for the healing process. He will be the courageous one and Hillary will be forced to put him on the ticket.
Watch. Obama does not have to have Hillary as the VP. Hillary has to have Obama.
Dean actually said this - that they would seat Florida and Michigan but their delegates won't count.
Talk about make your head spin.
They know that if they don't seat them, they will loose them in the fall.
So they think by just seating them, like wooden dumbbells, without allowing them to count, is going to fool them all into a cum-ba-yah moment come Nov.
