Maumee pastor steps down after accusation
Toledo Blade ^ | April 12, 2008 | Janet Romaker

The Rev. Frank Murd has resigned as pastor of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Maumee because he is under investigation based on an accusation of improper sexual contact with an adult, the Toledo diocese reported yesterday.

Sylvania Township police are investigating the accusation against Father Murd, 65, who has been pastor of St. Joseph's since July, 2003.

The alleged incident occurred March 18 in a hot tub at the YMCA/JCC, Robert Metzger, the township's police chief said last night. No charges have been filed, he said.

Rule of thumb: don't get into a hot tub with any male, even if it's your pastor.

2nd rule of thumb: Perverted priests are never straight - they’re always homos.

Yeah, what does he think he is? A politician? Maybe as a second career.

Rule of thumb #2: If you’re a pastor, never get into a hot tub with anyone not your spouse.

Seriously.

The damage is in the accusation. Once the bell is run, it cannot be un-ring. The pastor’s career is so badly damaged that they might as well look to selling life insurance as a second career.

I know of clergy who refuse to drink anything, including water, if there is alcohol present, for fear they’ll be seen “drinking” and then, in later rumors, “drunk.”

Pastors routinely make sure that they’re never alone w/ another person — used to be only worried about alone w/ females, but now, either gender is a threat.

God might call pastors to save sinners, but sinners make sure that the pastor can’t go near anyone who needs help.

Now, a pastor is not the same thing as a priest, is it? I believe a pastor can be married...?

“Pastors” is a word which includes Protestants. Catholic pastors are priests with resposibility over a parish. No Catholic priests can be married, if that’s what you meant.

It seems to me that something rather strange is going on here. They got this guy to step down rather quickly. They already have another pastor coming aboard in July.

Was there something in this pastor’s past that made this a done deal, if he ever screwed up again?

It just seems like the Church abandoned the guy without any due process at all.

No, I know that priests cannot marry. I just thought that the Catholic Church allowed some men who were already married, perhaps, who felt a desire towards the ministry, to become a “pastor” of a congregation...to tend to the flock, to preach sermons...to do everything but administer the eucharist.

I thought I knew someone who knew someone who had done this. I could be very wrong.

At any rate, I missed the fact that they called this guy “Father” in this article. My bad.

It sounds like the bishop was acting quickly, but it does indicate that they investigated, so there must have been something to it. Furthermore, he may have had other questionable incidents in his past, but they just didn’t go that far (whatever it was) or were one of those things that make people uncomfortable but aren’t really clear enough to identify.

I’d rather see them act quickly than let it drag out. Most bishops are so lily-livered and afraid of offending that they wait until there’s practically a video available before they do anything.

” No Catholic priests can be married, if that’s what you meant.”

Unless they were married while they served as Episcopalean priests and then converted. Then they are allowed to remain married - but they don’t get their own parish.

Heck. If I were a pastor, I would brag about being alone with a woman. I would trot her out when I was arrested for sexual advances on a man.

It is so sad that we have come to this as a society, but that is so true. Even when counseling someone on a highly sensitive matter, the pastor needs to have someone else present.

The alleged incident occurred March 18 in a hot tub at the YMCA/JCC, Robert Metzger, the township's police chief said last night.

If I was editing TV news I would report this story with the Village People on the soundtrack.

Young man, there's no need to feel down.
I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground.
I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town
There's no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there's a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you're short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

You can get yourself clean, you can have a good meal,
You can do whatever you feel ...

Young man, are you listening to me?
I said, young man, what do you want to be?
I said, young man, you can make real your dreams.
But you've got to know this one thing!

No man does it all by himself.
I said, young man, put your pride on the shelf,
And just go there, to the Y.M.C.A.
I'm sure they can help you today.

Young man, I was once in your shoes.
I said, I was down and out with the blues.
I felt no man cared if I were alive.
I felt the whole world was so jive ...

That's when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.
It's a place there called the Y.M.C.A.
They can start you back on your way.

It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A.

They have everything that you need to enjoy,
You can hang out with all the boys ...

YMCA
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A
Young man, young man there's no need to feel down
Young man, young man pick yourself off the ground

YMCA
It's fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A
Young man, young man are you listening to me?
Young man, young man what do you wanna be?

Y-M-C-A
you'll find it at the Y-M-C-A
no man, young man does it all by himself
young man, young man put your pride on the shelf

Y-M-C-A
then just go to the Y-M-C-A
young man, young man I was once in your shoes
young man, young man I said, I was down and out with the blues.

What was the good Father doing at the YMCA (Protestant)/ JCC (Jewish) anyway. He should have been hot-tubbing it at the CYC (Catholic).
