Requiem for Sen. Joseph McCarthy

Two weeks ago, the Christian world solemnly celebrated the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the Jews the Feast of Purim. Easter has passed; nevertheless, because of the 40th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (marked yesterday), my heart is still in a solemn mood, so I will endeavor to memorialize another authentic American hero, a forgotten and complex man. Sen. Joseph McCarthy, R-Wis., was a man's man whose very name to this day engenders fear, malediction and loathing from progressive intellectuals, academics, Hollywood and politicians – both Republicans and Democrats who if they were honest, must realize deep, deep down in their hearts that they are mere pygmies to this towering colossus. I remember Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Many of the immortal masters of classical music – Palestrina, Victoria, Vivaldi, Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Verdi and others – have written their greatest masterpieces in this most sacred genre of requiem, music that continues to probe the profound, gloomy depths of the human condition to offer this hellish world a glimmer of hope for redemption. Our modern-day Joe McCarthy, conservative writer Ann Coulter, one of the few contemporary intellectuals with the guts to place McCarthy in his proper historical context as a truly heroic and transcendent figure, had these words regarding the death of one of America's greatest political figures:

If I were to create a list of 20th Century men who “saved the world”, it would start with Reagan and Churchill, but Joseph McCarthy would not be far behind.

Joseph McCarthy was an American hero. He was slandered and defamed by the same type of people who practice the same types of tactics on their enemies today.

I was one of those people who unthinkingly believed about McCarthy what my teachers taught me in school, and what I saw in the newpapers, magazines and on television.

When I read Ann Coulter’s book “Treason”, I was perplexed. I was puzzled why her account of the famous encounter between Joseph Welch and Joseph McCarthy was so completely and diametrically different from the accounts I had grown up with and been taught.

It wasn’t just a little different, it was COMPLETELY different. So I did what the Internet allows you to do these days: I researched. I obtained the transcripts of the actual hearings, and read them.

Ann Coulter was spot on in her characterization of that hearing, and the others as well. After I read that, I began to read everything that didn’t appear to be completely slanted against McCarthy. I read three separate books on Venona, and then capped it off with the book that was, for me, the most important political book I have read in my life.

“Witness”, by Whittaker Chambers.

I was completely astounded by that book, and it explained a lot of things for me. It explained why the Left viewed Richard Nixon and Joseph McCarthy the way they did, and why all three of them, Chambers, Nixon, and McCarthy were villified and slandered by a poisonous and biased media.

What is perhaps most disturbing of all is to see that the Left practices the exact same form of character assassination warfare today that it practiced fifty years ago against Whittaker Chambers. Exactly.

I admit freely that it was a disillusioning time for me. To realize that all my teachers, people I had no reason to distrust, fed me a steady diet of falsehood regarding Joseph McCarthy. There is no doubt in my mind whatsoever.

The good thing about it is that I now view everything political with a grain of salt, which I think is healthy. I am also now completely biased towards the right of the political spectrum. I have no use for the Left.

This was cemented for me last March at the Gathering of Eagles down in Washington, D.C.

I saw with my OWN eyes what happened that day, and I watched the news with ten other people afterwards, and was stupefied by the way the media presented it on television. Everyone in the room, all of us who had actually BEEN there and seen what went on, looked at each other in disbelief. I will say that there was not one person who was surprised by it, but...that didn’t mean we had to accept it. That was the first time I had seen on my own, the bias of the media.

Welcome to the club. My wife and I returned from the Second Amendment Sisters counterprotest against the bogus Rosie Odonnell "Million Mom March." to watch the grotesquely slanted news coverage of the event. We haven't watched broadcast TV in years, partly as a result of the plain and obvious bias they exhibited. It's just not worth our time to watch badly written fiction and propoganda.

Ann Coulter's book "Treason" is an incredibly good read and deals extensively with Senator McCarthy's voyage and dealings with the American communist left.

What brings me to post is that News Max, which I do respect, carried a piece by a Ronald Kessler. So far so good. Mr Kesslers opening line is that the effect that there is a dangerous movement by conservative writers to defend McCarthy. This of course is his right.

This man repeated the absolute hyperbole about McCarthy and his figures of 205 communists. Not that there never were for a certainty. It was, of course his statement of 57 card carrying communists in the administration. Again the famous moment when Joseph Welch, Army counsel, paused and said "Have you no shame Senator?" And again he repeated it. To the absolute joy of the liberal press. McCarthy had asked about a young lawyer Frederick G Fisher Jr.

Ann Coulter and M.Stanton Evans had outed that statement. For weeks before, this same Joseph Welch had made a statement to the New York Times. He reported he had "relieved from duty" from his office, this Fisher. He said Fisher admitted membership in the National Lawyers Guild. The Attorney General of the day, Herbert Brownell has listed the Guild as a Communist-front organization. In short Welch had already fired and outed Fisher. McCarthy merely wanted a little information on the man.

A dangerous movement? More leftist semi-hysteria or hyperbole, take your choice- or disagree.

The Tydings Panel was a lynch mob.

You may already know a this about Senator Tydings, but others might get a rueful chuckle. In the book, Blacklisted By History (M.Stanton Evans) p244.there is a photograph of handsome Senator Tydings. He is posing with a phonograph and record. Tydings told the Senate he could prove McCarthy lied at his Wheeling West Virginia speech about the number of Communists. The press reported Tydings had been prevented from playing the recording. Tydings said "they will hear the Senator's own voice." This previously.

Tydings was later questioned by McCarthy's attorney. He admitted there was no such recording. I believe one Dan Rather too, was a little lax in matters of important journalistic integrity.

I knew from my long held interest in Soviet cold war espionage, and things like Venona that McCarthy had received a bad rap, but I didn't realize the extent of the politically motivated savaging of him until I read Ann Coulters material and then the M. Stanton Evans Book. I very much recommend "Blacklisted by History" to anyone who has any interest in the matter.

What really amazed me was the fact that when the committe brought comtempt proceedings against former Communist Party boss Earl Browder, who was then hauled before a court facing prison time. "Browder brought only one witness to the stand to defend him against the Tydings contempt citation. That single witness was Joe McCarthy." (Pages 217-218). Some paranoid red-baiting inquisitor huh?
