Gov. Eliot Spitzer ended up as the subject of an investigation into a prostitution ring because his bank branch in Manhattan turned him in to the Internal Revenue Service as someone who might be engaged in suspicious currency transactions, according to sources familiar with the investigation.

It’s even lower than $5,000 now, but the exact number is kept secret. I discovered this when withdrawing cash from my local branch, and they asked for my driver’s license as well as my bank card, and swiped them both through the reader. I asked why the driver license was also swiped, and they said it was the rule for large cash withdrawals. I asked what the limit was, and they said, “I’m sorry sir, but we are not allowed to divulge that information.”
In my own bank, and it was well under $5,000.

Banks are free to establish whatever protocols they may believe are appropriate to prevent fraudulent transactions. Under the Uniform Commercial Code, a bank is financially liable for permitting fraudulent withdrawals from a depositor’s account. It makes perfect sense that a bank wouldn’t publicize what its protocols were.
What bank? Might there have been a chance for career advancement and notice high up the chain that the good governor had become a blip on the screen?

I’ve been in banking for 13 years. I never dealt with deposit accounts, cash or transfers. But I still had to be trained annually to spot transactions exactly like what Spitzer did.
Be sure to tell that to any of your Dem friends that think this is somehow politically motivated. Tellers and branch managers file these reports all the time.

My husband’s grandmother had cash stashed all over her house. She would go to the bank get out 300-500 bucks and put it someplace “safe” at home, then she would then promptly forget where she had put it and have to go back to the bank for more. lol Her house was like a treasure hunt after she died. In drawers, inside old magazines stacked in the den, top shelf of closets, jars in the litchen, old teapots, you name it she had a bit of money hidden there.
Apparently, having second thoughts about even sending the total amount in this manner because it still might reveal what he was doing, Spitzer then asked that the bank to take his name off the wires, the sources said.
