Lauren Richardson Becomes Next Terri Schiavo as Parents Debate Euthanasia (Delaware)
LifeNews ^ | 2/1/2008 | Steven Ertelt

Posted on 02/01/2008 2:51:57 PM PST by Pyro7480

A Delaware woman has become the next Terri Schiavo as her parents engage in a massive legal and philosophical debate about whether to subject her to euthanasia. Richardson is a 23-year-old woman who overdosed on heroin in August 2006 while she was three months pregnant with a baby girl.

Doctors kept Lauren on life support until she delivered her baby in February 2007. Shortly thereafter, her parents began a fight that is reminiscent of the battle over Terri's life and death.

As in the Terri Schiavo case, physicians have been quick to label Lauren as having a persistent vegetative state -- something Terri's family called dehumanizing and medically inaccurate as patients have recovered from it.

Edith Towers, Lauren's mother, wants to remove her feeding tube and starve and dehydrate her to death in the same manner that Michael Schiavo subjected Terri.

Towers claims Lauren would never have wanted to live as a permanently disabled person, but Lauren, as with Terri, did not have a living will or other advance directive spelling out her treatment wishes. She claims Lauren told her during Terri's battle that she would not want to live like her.

On the other side is Randy Richardson, Lauren's father is fighting to save her life and wants to be appointed as her guardian to ensure she receives appropriate medical care and treatment.

"She's committed no crime and doesn't deserve to have this death imposed on her," Richardson told the News Journal newspaper on Wednesday. "We just want to give her a chance."

Lauren no longer uses a ventilator or other breathing apparatus and is not on artificial life support -- something Randy contends is showing progress.

Towers is winning the legal battle in court as she was awarded guardianship of Lauren, but Randy Richardson has filed an appeal.

The News Journal indicates Delaware Court of Chancery Master Sam Glasscock III has put any action taking Lauren's life on hold while the court reviews the guardianship ruling -- a process that could take as much as three months to complete.

Regardless of the decision, an appeal to the Delaware Supreme Court is expected.

Randy Richardson also has other concerns about his daughter and says that Towers, his ex-wife, has not allowed Lauren's baby to see her.

Richardson and the Delaware Pro-Life Coalition released a video on Wednesday that shows Lauren at a nursing home reacting to family members and a dog.

The pro-life group also organized a prayer vigil near the Arbors Rehab Center in New Castle.

Javona Peters, Requiescant in Pace...

.................................

Bronx, NY (LifeNews.com) -- Javona Peters was considered by some to be New York's Terri Schiavo -- a disabled, comatose girl whose family was divided over her medical fate. Peters, who fell into a coma in October while she had a routine medical procedure at Montefiore Medical Center, recently passed away.

Doctors had pegged her as being in a persistent vegetative state, a medical diagnosis pro-life advocates dispute because so many patients have partially or fully recovered.

Last month, Peters' mother was named her guardian, but only for the purpose of pursuing a medical malpractice lawsuit.

The fight to save Javona Peters reminded some of the struggle of the Schindler family in Florida to save the life of Terri Schiavo, a beloved daughter and sibling whose former husband eventually took her life.

Peters' parents, Janet Joseph and Leonard Peters, disagreed on whether or not to remove her feeding tube and take her life.

Wesley J. Smith, a noted attorney and bioethics watchdog, says the fight never got to court, the way the battle over Terri Schiavo did.

"It is my understanding that, to their credit, both parents who are estranged, never got to the place where they fought in court over removing her feeding tube, but instead cooperated in medical decision making," he commented after learning of Peters' death.

"This may not assuage their grief now in the agony of losing a child, but I hope both can take a bit of comfort that she was given every medical chance to survive," he added.

Peters' parents were never married and are estranged and both filed separate requests to be given custody of their daughter. Peters has been opposed to removing the feeding tube but had wavered recently.

As a teen, Peters didn't have a living will or some other advanced directive providing guidelines for the type of medical treatment, or withdrawal, she favors.

The case drew the attention of the Schindler family, who sent out a notice about the case from their foundation, which helps disabled patients receive legal help and appropriate medical care.

Ultimately, Smith said he hopes the case will show that a rushed decision to determine someone is in a persistent vegetative state isn't appropriate.

"We know that too often medical teams and social workers pressure and cajole for such outcomes," he said.

Smith draws comparisons to the case of Haleigh Poutre, a Massachusetts girl whom LifeNews.com reported was also declared PVS, but who has recovered from the abuse she suffered. In that case, state government officials had ordered her feeding tube removed but she recovered from the PVS state shortly beforehand.

McCain Scrutiny...

Thanks, FV, for the ping.

Unspun has a followup thread to the one done by JR. Huckabee is the only candidate left standing outside of the Marx brothers, Groucho, Harpie, and Karl. As a Christian, I could not vote for any of the Marx brothers any more than I would sell part of my soul to the devil. None of those "chosen ones" would give a future Terri a chance. Mike Huckabee is the only one left.

..........................

We know our objective: to prevent a first ballot victory by John McCain.

I think we also know the only effective way to do this: campaigning for Mike Huckabee.

Please go to mikehuckabee.com and/or to hucksarmy.com and get busy.

The Obama Nation looms. Thread by Perdogg on the chump change from the candidate from Hopeless...

We must remember it is we who are sane and not Barack Hussein.

As transparently biased as the MSM is, it should raise flags when they ooh and ahh (24/7) over a politician, who, quite clearly, is also a Democrat with socialist views and a strong supporter of pro-abortion legislation, particularly the gruesome partial-birth abortion...........

REPORTING from the State of Florida which engaged in the following:

1. Starving/dehydrating a disabled woman to death for her right to privacy. TERRI SCHIAVO: died 3-31-08

2. Suffocating a minor in state custody with ammonia capsules and roughing him up until he was dead. MARTIN ANDERSON: died 1-6-06 (STATE GAVE HIS PARENTS 3 - 5 MILLION BUCKS. COPS WERE ACQUITTED but they were guilty as h,e, double hockey sticks!

3. The land of "Don't taze me bro."

4. The latest OPPRESSION in Hillsborough County. A paraplegic man is arrested for eluding the police (best they could think up?) and is DUMPED out of his wheelchair at the check in desk at the Sheriff's office. He's going to SUE FLORIDA and I will pay for police brutality and discrimination yet I don't condone the brutality and mindset of Florida's non-judicious, judicial system. This wronged man is all over you tube being dumped to the floor.

What will NAUGHTY FLORIDA do next?

Charles Barkley despises Christians and he’s considering running for Gov. of Alabama. How do you do that and not treat people equally, even little ol’ Christians? He’s clueless and I think he’s for BHO.

Thank you for the ping.

Remember, everybody: it is intellectual stupidity, utterly unscientific, and potentially insane, to label a living human being as “in a vegitative state.”

Samuel Golubchuk amplification from LifeNews...

.................................

Winnipeg, Canada (LifeNews.com) -- The family of Terri Schiavo is coming to the aide of Samuel Golubchuck and has lobbied a hospital in Canada to not revoke his food and water or his lifesaving medical treatment. The Schindler family's help comes just as Golubchuck's family celebrated a court decision in their favor.

Golubchuck's family won a victory this past week when a court issued an injunction preventing Grace General Hospital from removing Samuel Golubchuck's life support and killing him.

His family has been arguing with hospital officials who claim he is to far gone to receive proper medical care. Grace Hospital will not be allowed to remove the respirator, dehydrate, or starve Golubchuck while the family presents more evidence at a trial.

The family is getting help from Bobby Schindler, Terri Schiavo's brother, who says their situation is worse because they are in agreement about Golubchuck's care but are fighting hospital officials who are bent on letting him die.

"We're against what the hospital is doing," Schindler told the Canadian Press. "This is alarming when you have hospitals making these decisions."

Schindler said he wrote hospital officials on Samuel's behalf and, "They did respond, but it basically said they were giving the gentleman the best care they could."

Golubchuck is an elderly Jewish man who is on life support and has a feeding tube.

His children are strongly opposed to removing him from a ventilator and feeding tube and have cited Jewish law which forbids such actions depriving people of their right to life.

The children also say that their father would oppose the stopping of lifesaving medical care if he could express his treatment wishes.

Alex Schadenberg of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition previously told LifeNews.com, "We need to demand that Grace General Hospital not take this case further and agree to leave Samuel Golubchuk and his family alone, as they spend time with their father as he experiences the final part of his life."

Taze The Nation. May it never become the Obama Nation...

Thread by wagglebee on The Nation attacks on pro-life activists...

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- A leading magazine with a pro-abortion slant has painted an international pro-life group as racist because it is concerned about the severe underpopulation problems plaguing, Europe, Russia, Japan and other parts of the world. The magazine will release an article on the World Congress of Families in its March 3 issue.

The article, "Missing: The 'Right' Babies," written by reporter Kathryn Joyce, attempts to paint the pro-life group and others sounding the alarm about the coming demographic winter as concerned only with preserving the white majority of Europe and the United States.

The organization told LifeNews.com that characterization is ironic given that the population control movement, which The Nation supports, was started by Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger to limit the birth of ethnic populations.............

Shucks, it is just an extension of a Woman's Right to Choose, something the liberals cry out is a Constitutional Right!

A network of "suicide gurus" who use the internet to advise people how to kill themselves has been exposed.

Websites offering advice on how to commit suicide are linked to young deaths

They are blamed for prompting depressed and vulnerable youngsters to take their own lives.

One, an American satanist who boasts of writing a guide to the subject, says: "What's the problem with ending your life via suicide?"

Another is a "pro-choice" Dutch writer whose website includes detailed accounts of dozens of suicide methods. Campaigners have uncovered 29 "internet suicides" in Britain since 2001, including two new cases reported this weekend.......................

WASHINGTON DC, February 15, 2008 (LifeSiteNews.com) - The American Public Health Association (APHA) yesterday announced a range of policies that were approved by the Association's Governing Council during last year's annual meeting in Washington, DC.

Among a long list of generally positive health policy initiatives is a call for the removal of all restrictions that limit access to abortion in the US, including the repeal of parental consent laws and partial birth abortion bans...............
