Huckabee asks if Mormons believe Jesus, devil are brothers

Republican presidential hopeful Mike Huckabee, an ordained Southern Baptist minister, asks in an upcoming article, "Don't Mormons believe that Jesus and the devil are brothers?"

The article, to be published in Sunday's New York Times Magazine, says Huckabee asked the question after saying he believes Mormonism is a religion but doesn't know much about it. His rival Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, is a member of the Mormon church, which is known officially as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The authoritative Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992, does not refer to Jesus and Satan as brothers. It speaks of Jesus as the son of God and of Satan as a fallen angel, which is a Biblical account.

A spokeswoman for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said Huckabee's question is usually raised by those who wish to smear the Mormon faith rather than clarify doctrine.

"We believe, as other Christians believe and as Paul wrote, that God is the father of all," said the spokeswoman, Kim Farah. "That means that all beings were created by God and are his spirit children. Christ, on the other hand, was the only begotten in the flesh and we worship him as the son of God and the savior of mankind. Satan is the exact opposite of who Christ is and what he stands for."

Romney did not respond to a request for comment.

Earlier this month in Iowa, Huckabee wouldn't say whether he thought Mormonism — rival Romney's religion — was a cult.

"I'm just not going to go off into evaluating other people's doctrines and faiths. I think that is absolutely not a role for a president," the former Arkansas governor said.

Are you going for irony here?

Check out a movie put out in the early 1980s called “The Godmakers”...It is a real eye opener on Mormonism and told by 2 former members...(if you can find a copy of the film, that is)

It sounds like a symbiotic relationship ... So my question to you is...which one is the parasite and which one is the host?

Wrong analogy.

A better example, which came from a Lutheran pastor, is to assume you begin doing business when you graduate from school as a sole proprietorship. After a while, you are successful and decide to incorporate part of your operations to gain the advantage of, say, limited liability. Then a short time later, you place part of your enterprise into a limited liability partnership to eliminate corporate income tax. In this case, you are operating in three forms. But because you own 100% of each each enterprise, a customer such as myself would be doing business in every instance with you.

In a way, that's how the Trinity functions. One God interacting with man in three forms.

Is that you God?

I fail to see the relevance of the question. Jesus and the devil were brothers? One went bad, one went good. So what?

Yes, and they also customarily ensure that the Republican presidential candidate gets upwards of 70 percent of the vote in Utah and Idaho.

LOL! Hang around homeschool moms for awhile. Most are great ladies, but a few! SNL’s churchlady has nothing on them in the sanctimony department. A good friend of mine was actually told to her face, “You are such a nice person. It is just too bad you’re going to hell because you’re a Catholic.”

And, religion aside, I knew Huckabee’d overplay his hand, I just didn’t think it would be this soon. This kind of nonsense is going to turn off a LOT of people.

Yeah, I'll check that one out right after I see An Inconvenient Truth, Redacted, and Mary Poppins.

Baptists play softball, and then have a potluck.

After my youngest daughter's wedding we had a full feed recption for a couple hundred people (on me of course), any way, I was sitting by the minister and he ate and ate and ate.

Pretty soon he excused himself, telling me he had a church pot luck that he had to get to. I asked him if was going to eat again. He said, "of course".

Luthern.

“He will talk himself out of the race.”

Hopefully both Huck AND Mitt will talk themselves out of the race. Huck is playing on his Holier than Thou position as a minister. But Romney can’t hide from the question Huck asked, nor from a lot even more difficult questions (for example, did God the Father inseminate the Virgin Mary?), because these questions go to the heart of Mormon beliefs.

In other words, we have a circular firing squad about to take place and a pox on both of them.

But a pox as well on all those who believe we can just ignore a candidate’s fundamental religious beliefs. Heck, mixed religions rarely works in marriage, why should it automatically work at the presidential level?

I didn’t say I don’t accept the trinity. I said I don’t understand it. I also don’t believe it’s terribly important to understand it. I also don’t believe it’s terribly important to accept it. I think as long as you believe jesus was here in the flesh and rose from the dead and had an important message for us from god, then that’s all that matters. Any more specific than that and you are getting in over your head.
