ALLENTOWN, Pa. — Two days after naming its mascot "PorkChop," the Philadelphia Phillies' new Triple-A affiliate abruptly dropped the moniker after receiving complaints from Hispanics that it was offensive.

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, whose mascot is a large, furry pig, had selected PorkChop from more than 7,300 fan submissions. The team, which begins play in 2008, announced Monday that the mascot will be named "Ferrous" instead.

General Manager Kurt Landes said he heard from several Hispanics who said PorkChop was derogatory.

Why would someone bother to write the story and leave out the explanation of why it is offensive?

If our society is getting so dainty and fragile then I wonder what sort of future do we face.

I think these several Hispanic dudes are mistaken in their complaint. From the Urban Dictionary:

Pork Chop is a slang word referring to Portuguese people. It is not offensive to call someone of Portuguese decent a Pork Chop because it is considered humorous and endearing. Portuguese people refer to themselves as Pork Chops all the time and it has nothing to do with overweight women. "My boyfriend is the most amazing man in the world..I love my Pork Chop"

As an American of Irish descent, I demand that the racist "Mick"ey Mantle statue be removed from Yankees Stadium.

Too many of my poor oppressed ancestors were called "Mick" for me to tolerate such a deliberate insult.

I went to high school with a kid who had one black parent and one hispanic parent. He went by the nickname "Pork Chop". Never seemed to bother him.

so now they go to Ferrous. They'll need an explanation in the game program to help at least 70% of the fans understand the relation of ferrous to iron.

Gee, I wonder if Shari Lewis (God Rest her soul) offended any body with "Lamb Chop." I understand that "Lamb Chop's Passover Surprise" is quite a shock for her!

Sounds like two people simply didn’t like the name so they called it offensive. I wonder if the offended ones had anything to do with the new name.

I’m not thrilled with the name “Lansing lug nuts”. Maybe “Metallic wheel fasteners” would be more appropriate.

Ferrous is offensive to me and my family. What now?

HA! Good one - how about more than several Freepers calling the team and complaining about that one.

“from several Hispanics who said PorkChop was derogatory.”

I’m just not up to date on all of the different ways that different types of people can be offended. It goes over my head.
I learn everyday.

If my parents were alive, they'd be having fits..

So would mine, they'd be having fits about the state of PC idiots in this country.

When this story first broke yesterday, I couldn't even find out who it was that was offended. Finally last night they found this guy to say his parents WOULD HAVE been offended.

JERK!

pork chop: A racist term referring to Puerto Rican people; also slang referring to Portuguese people. It is not offensive to call someone of Portuguese descent a pork chop because it is considered humorous and endearing.

As Mark Steyn says:

"...the right not to be offended is now the most sacred right in the world. The right to freedom of speech, freedom of association, freedom of movement, all are as nothing compared to the universal right to freedom from offense."

I find ferrous offensive, Perhaps I should make them change it again. “Blah” might be a safer choice.
