Titanic survivor dies (only 1 survivor now remaining)

One of the two last survivors of the 1912 sinking of the ill-fated Southampton liner, Titanic, has died.

Throughout her life, Barbara West Dainton shunned publicity, refusing to talk about the loss of the Titanic and in the end she insisted her funeral, held earlier this week in Truro, was to take place before any public announcement of her death.

With her death in Cornwall aged 96 the only remaining Titanic passenger left alive is 95-year-old Milvina Dean who lives in Woodlands, near Southampton.

Born in Bournemouth, Dorset, Mrs West Dainton was a second-class passenger on Titanic with her father, mother and sister, Constance. She survived the sinking possibly aboard lifeboat ten, along with her mother and sister and went on to marry in 1952.

Milvina Dean was just a ten week old baby when the ship hit the iceberg and was the youngest person to live to tell the tale of the loss of Titanic.

“...the youngest person to live to tell the tale ...”

Huh?

She was only 10 weeks old? What “tale” could she tell.

Great journalism (Sheesh)

Right. Now we know where the Byzanium is buried!

Seriously. Good for her, and God Bless.

“Live to tell the tale” has become something of a cliche. Nonetheless, a journalist should understand the contradiction here.

Maybe Bob Woodward held a reporter’s seance with her?

I'm sure the sinking was seared into her memory.

Only speculative. She refused to talk about it

If these facts are right, then Barbara West Dainton was just a year old when the Titanic went down, so she didn't have any 'tales' to tell either... Jeesh, what a poorly written story.

‘She was only 10 weeks old? What “tale” could she tell.’

Anyone alive in 1914 had tales to tell, her’s related to one of the most infamous man made tragedies in history was worth hearing I suspect.

Southampton liner? What does that mean? Never heard that adjective applied to the White Star liner built in Liverpool.

"Right. Now we know where the Byzanium is buried!"

Was there ever in history such a difference in quality between a great book and an absolutely horrendous movie? (RtT the movie was so bad that Clive Cussler refused to sell the rights to any other books for a very long time).

It was sailing from Southampton on its maiden voyage.

But that is a pretty tenuous reason for calling it the “Southampton liner”, you are quite right.

If that ship hadn’t sunk, thousands would still be alive!

She also heard the story from her family that survived with her....so while her version is ‘second hand’ it’s more up close and personal than most.

Exactly.

I’ve long held the view that anyone older than myself, let alone a half century older, has to know something I don’t by definition.

Its my job to find out what it is, and learn from that.

Cusslers books were my passion years ago, I thought the movie wasn't all that bad. I do hope Cussler can do more movies from his novels with better results, A relative of the ex-CEO of Disney was the one that botched Sahara, his current book The Chase I just finished, not as in depth with his original style and surprisingly fresh with a totally new style set over a hundred years ago, it was a good read and would make an excellent movie.

...But just imagine how much carbon it was spewing into the atmosphere! By sinking it saved us from an even earlier onset of GLOBULL WARMING!!!!!....................(yes, this thread is being hijacked! stay in your seats and don’t panic!)...........

I can't think of a worse adaptation off the top of my head. Though maybe the Sci-fi channel adaptation of Dune? Who was that guy playing Gurney Halleck?

Well, yeah, look at that carbon footprint, bigger than Big Foot's!
